Joystiq interview: Patrick Goschy talks about Midway, tells us he 'made the Wii'

Jan 16th 2008 8:48PM (Joystiq)
I'm not too sure if this guy has a decent case, but didn't Miyamoto say that he had the idea for the Wii for many years, well beyond the 2003 patent, but that the technology wasn't available at an affordable cost until recently? Maybe someone can find that interview.

Nintendo is known for an incredible R&D department and I have to agree with GST; it's a huge leap of faith to say that Nintendo stole his idea and that there weren't already a team of engineers working on a solution. We'll have to wait for the trial when Nintendo busts out with confidential information to support that this was an original idea on their part. I'm just willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until I hear otherwise.

Nintendo, Sony sued for alleged patent infringement

I agree there's something wrong here. Did Sony and Nintendo modify the Bluetooth communication method? There are certainly a lot of unknowns here for me, but if they are going by the Bluetooth industry standard for identifying devices, I don't see how this company could sue them instead of Ericsson, the founder of the communication method.

Nintendo uses natural selection for its quality control

Oct 25th 2007 4:07PM (Joystiq)
It's pretty apparent who the older gamers are from the younger ones. I can hardly imagine someone thinking this is an arrogant stance, but I can remember the days when Nintendo was very strict about not only quality, but content. Anyone remember the Mortal Kombat blood fiasco?

In my opinion, this is a smarter Nintendo who's learned something from the Sony model. I don't want a vendor to make decisions for me about what kind of game I play. I often have odd tastes and a game's beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If I see a Nintendo seal on a game, I expect that it's gone through a formal QA process and works correctly with the hardware within the engineering specs...period.

Does that mean we will get some really lousy stuff? Of course, but it also opens up the possibility for true gems to come out of left field. I'm happy to be my own content filter for the games I want to buy, I don't need Nintendo to do it for me.

You should really think about changing your screen name. Maybe 'slightlylessbiasedthanmostPS3ownerswhofeeljipped'?

Rumor: Next Mortal Kombat game versus DC

Sep 28th 2007 1:32PM (Joystiq)
I don't know why, but I get the exact same feeling when I look at that picture. It just looks so...wrong, wrong, WRONG! But like a car crash, I find I just can't stop looking at it.

Didn't that guy look in the mirror before leaving his house that day? Put some pants on for God's sake, and ours!

Peter Moore issued $22 million in EA stock

Sep 24th 2007 2:04PM (Joystiq)
I like you're thinking Exo, perfect Microsoft conspiracy theory kind of stuff.

That said, they haven't listed what kind of stock Moore's getting. I expect that the stock will follow a vestment schedule so unless Peter Moore can deliver defined objectives...such as increasing gross revenue by 10% over two years for example...he won't actually receive the stock, it's most likely restricted with a schedule. Anyone that's worked for a company that gives option incentives usually has a similiar vesting procedure. EA didn't actually just give Moore $21 million in common shares, he has to work for them.

Intel picks up Havok for $21M

Sep 17th 2007 1:34PM (Joystiq)
Actually, this might have a little more far-reaching impact than indicated. In particular, Intel is currently competing with AMD. Can you imagine if all the games listed above are only 'certified' to run on Intel chips?

While this certainly leaves me questions in regards to anti-trust laws, Intel has an image of using their siginficant muscle to manipulate the market. If the chip maker is also the one signing the checks for software development...even if it's middle-ware...you wonder how much support that subsidiary will give to AMD?

I'm kind of surprised that Intel would want to acquire this, although $110 mil is a drop in the bucket for them. It definitely leads to issues where there can be a conflict of interest. As a gamer I prefer to use Intel chips in my PC's, however competition keeps the prices down and I would rather Intel not bully AMD out of the market or we will all suffer. The only thing I can think of that might be positive is that the Havok engine could be optimized for Intel's Duo and Quad Core chips, but that's about all I can come up with.

August NPD: Madden and Wii on top, but not together

Sep 14th 2007 12:49PM (Joystiq)
I always get nostalgic any time I hear of the ORIGINAL console war. Atari, Intellivision and Colecovision really didn't have the same effect, but I can remember all those fights about Sega's graphics over Nintendo's great games. It brings a tear to my eye remembering all that great gaming goodness.

August NPD: Madden and Wii on top, but not together

Sep 14th 2007 8:04AM (Joystiq)
I'm definitely one of those 'unusual' Wii owners. I just bought MP3 a couple days ago. It was a definite must-buy, but the reality is I just couldn't break away to purchase the game until recently. Perhaps people will take away my 'hard core gamer' status even though I've been gaming since the 2600 but the reality is, I think a lot of us Wii owners just aren't able to purchase games at launch. We've got plenty of money, but a lot less time than we used to.
