Being bad "on purpose" does not make something any less bad, especially when it comes to video game interfaces. And I'm not saying Resident Evil controlled any better (though at least it had some decent level design).

TBQH nearly all the atmosphere of the old Silent Hill games was just slaughtered for me by the agonizing camera, laborious controls and mind-numbing level design. If I'm gonna be scared I need to feel immersed - every time I wrestle with the interface or have to endure some thickheaded design decision, I'm jerked out of the experience, no matter how brilliantly the game's atmosphere is crafted through graphics, sound and scenario. I've always said that the old Silent Hill titles are games made by artists - painters, composers, writers - but not game designers. That they were so out of touch with the accepted principles and language of game design is in some ways their strength (as with Shigesato Itoi and the Mother series) but in many more ways their weakness.

Just got a new Macbook and may try this out.

Sounds a bit like the dev team took inspiration from Dragon Quest V for this one.

...hell, if Dragon Quest V had a Tales battle system, maybe I'd have finished it.
