More Wii titles we'll never see

Dec 27th 2006 4:33PM (Joystiq)
most video games never make money as it is... add a risky interface and the ones with the wallets get skitish. With the Wii I think it is not a matter of higher costs... just more room for inovation and more room for risk and this market has never been about risk. It should be no suprise they are trying to churn out the same ol' same ol' even though there is a huge field in which to be creative.

More Wii titles we'll never see

Is it a discouraging sign that the innovative interface is not being creatively exploited here. With the razor thin profit margins games pull in, where will the incentive be to do something truly risky and bold and exciting. Almost all games are derivative anymore... and the ones that have novelty have just enough of it mixed in with a predictable formula. GOW is a shooter (we know shooters) with a splash of novelty (a cover system that works). It seems to me that the game that will really make the Wii take off will need to be ground breaking from the get go. Totally new interface, totally new game, totally unacceptable risks.
I am becoming more aware of how pressed developers must be with this new generation of titles. It costs more to make these games. Fewer customers with units in their homes. Those higher risks create a bad environment for innovation. Imagine what would have happened if the Wii had been HD. That would have driven the costs up more, reduced the profit possibilities and really stifled risk and creativity.

Developers still waiting for keys to PS3

Nov 28th 2006 10:00PM (Joystiq)

Can they spare a year... really? PS3 needs to be out of the gate in a flash... They have two things going for them here: 1) brand, 2) (probably) superior hardware. That hardware means nothing if it is not used by well crafted, creative innovative software. Giving developers a two year lag at making that happen is an odd move.

Trayless disk loading: rad (Xbox 360 annoyance #016)

This article is right...

Both systems "suck disks"

Big time.

(sorry I don't like to do the fanboy thing, but the word play was too fun to pass up.

Presumably what you'll look like playing Zelda on Wii

Nov 1st 2006 2:26PM (Joystiq)
Is it me or does it look like there is a delay (significant delay) between the motion and the actual action that said action should illicit in the on screen character. It looks like the entire gesture must be complete before the animation begins... so your on screen swing begins the moment your actual swing ends. Will that work? If there is any timing necessary for the game... that could get pretty aggravating. I would love to see this thing work… but you have to give the machine enough input to understand what you are doing. How could they overcome this problem?

Speaking of fantastic games... when are we getting Settlers and Carcassone on xbox live... I need a date! (That sounds a little sad doesn't it.)

Mizuguchi defends Lumines Live

There is an interesting write up on this “model” on Penny Arcade right now. Tycho makes the point that this model (customizable, piece-wise, nickel and dime) will ultimately yield a little more scratch and is perhaps a better business model.

This could get old really quick. I think the initial back lash over the first Oblivion horse content should be taken pretty seriously. We don’t mind paying for material. I have bought games on Live. Some great some not so great… I can live with that. What I don’t like is feeling like I am getting led along, while being bled for cash. At some point you stop feeling like a customer who is in control of what they are buying and you start feeling like a girl who let her prom date go a little too far.

I think it is really interesting that the first Xbox game (Lumines) to really use this model was first seen on a Sony unit. This might look like a better business model and a better way to generate more money… but what are the long term repercussions when you have also managed to generate resentment toward your brand. I don’t mind paying 60 bucks for a game… but I do mind paying 60 bucks for a game and then another 30 just to make it playable. If this is the future of gaming, I may have to go back to pong.

This question becomes kind of bigger than this particular post Pomme. I would hope the powers that be here at Joystiq appreciate all kinds of feedback. The variety of opinions make this a discussion and a collaborative enterprise. If everyone thought all the posts were perfect, there would be no need to comment. I post when I like something, I post when I don't…. sometimes I don’t post at all.

If this is a great post, defend it... don't berate the people are pressing for a little more depth and quality.

The reason sites like joystiq and engadget are useful is because they serve as a clearing house for the information I would normally comb other sites to find. At joystiq I can see what is out there, and I can read more if I so choose.

The occasional editorial is great, but please post items you would actually offer a star for posting. If the site ceases to do what people need for it to do, they will stop visiting.

This is "series" is a waste of our time.

LEGO Star Wars II demo impressions

Sep 26th 2006 6:42PM (Joystiq Xbox)
I want to drop myself in frozen suspension for about 3 weeks when all the new games start coming out. I rented this game and I found it interesting for about 1 hour and then it became so unbelievably repetitive and mindless I couldn’t muster the energy to finish it. There is no depth, the cutscenes make me want to fast forward... but you can't! Why must Lucas keep whoring the relics of my childhood to pay for his fabulous lifestyle!

Then I got a taste of the F.E.A.R. demo last night and I wept mingled tears of joy and frustration. Joy for the sweetness I had played, frustration for the weeks I would be forced to play Geometry Wars, Texas Hold’em and Halo 2 until I get binging on some Splinter Cell sweetness. Then it is just a few short weeks until Gears of War and F.E.A.R drop. I hate this pre-Christmas wasteland. What are we supposed to do with ourselves!

Note to reader: I have a life and the above contains some hyperbole… but my comments stand… bring on some new games worth playing!
