Trailer of the Day: 'Alien Versus Ninja'

Jun 9th 2010 2:52PM (Cinematical)
Looks like the perfect kind of movie to get some friends over and watch together. Silly fun.

Discuss: Is 3-D Really Necessary?

Mar 8th 2010 5:42PM (Cinematical)
I can't say I found it distracting or that the human characters seemed out of place in Alice in Wonderland at all for me.

That said, I don't really need it to go to a movie.. story will always be the most important element.

Shelf Life: The Neverending Story

Mar 2nd 2010 5:40PM (Cinematical)
I absolutely loved this movie as a kid, and you're right, it still holds up today.

Have you ever read the book? A few years ago I purchased it out of curiousity and I'm so glad I did. The book does an even greater job of drawing you in and making you feel like you have just as much of an effect on the story as Bastion does.

Their Best Role: Steve Buscemi in 'Ghost World'

I agree whole heartedly. A large part of the reason I love this film is his portrayal of Seymour. Now I want to go home and watch it again.

Discuss: How Long Should You Keep Netflix DVDs?

Dec 1st 2009 5:48PM (Cinematical)
I wonder how many people realize you can put your Netflix account on hold. I imagine Netflix doesn't go out of their way to advertise this themselves, as it means you won't be paying them a monthly fee for a little bit. But you can put your account on hold for as long as 3 months. It's also incredibly easy to cancel and restart your account at any time, as they save your queue for quite a while (I forget the total length of time.. it may even be as long as a year). So if you're one of those people who holds on to movies for months because you just can't get around to watching them.. consider both of these options. Yes, you have to send the movies back within 7 days or be charged for them.. but just put the movie at the top of your queue and you'll be sent it again as soon as your account is reactivated.

I tend to watch a movie within 5 days of it being sent to me, and then send it back immediately afterward. Still the entire point of Netflix is to be able to keep your movies for as long as you would like. I'm not sure why you would want to keep them for longer than the equivalent of what it would take you to purchase the movie (At the 8.99 rate, you would pay for the movie within 2-3 months) but that's your decision.

I think ever since they dropped the option to sell the extra copies of their movies, Netflix seriously reduced the number of each disc they have. Long waits are definitely increasing.

Also, just in case: if you're the person holding onto disc1 of Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 1 in Louisiana, would you consider sending it back, please? :)

Wait, Wait, Wait: 'Steven Seagal: Lawman'?

Dec 1st 2009 5:29PM (Cinematical)
This was apparently incredibly low key, as I've lived in Jefferson Parish for nearly all 28 years of my life and I only heard about this in the last year or so when they announced the show coming out.

There's also nothing downscale about Jefferson Parish. We have our mix of rich and poor areas, the same as Orleans, and were over all less damaged by Hurricane Katrina and the levee breech. I'll be interested to see exactly what parts of the parish he does most of his work in.

Their Best Role: Brad Pitt and 'Fight Club'

Nov 12th 2009 2:51PM (Cinematical)
I don't think anyone else could have played Tyler Durden, so even if its not his best role, he was certainly the absolute best for the part. Given that Tyler is supposed to idealized, and Pitt was the "sexiest man alive" around that time, it was just perfect. Personally I would have a hard time between this and Se7en to choose which was his best. But I do think this was the first time when he went from "that guy other women seem to drool over" to "a great actor" in my eyes.

Nintendo planning to offer WiiWare demos

Nov 3rd 2009 5:38PM (Joystiq)
While more could never hurt, I think there's a lot of demos on PSN. In fact most of my "games" are demos, and the ones I do own I tried in demo form for the most part first. I just wish they wouldn't wait a couple weeks before releasing them.

Steve Carr To Direct 'Short Circuit' Remake

Oct 27th 2009 12:06PM (Cinematical)
So basically they changed Stephanie into a little boy, changing it from Hippy Girl falls in love with Computer Nerd to Robot helps fractured family become whole again.

I'm so glad I can enjoy the original on dvd and ignore this remake.

Is There Subtle Racism in Movie Posters?

Oct 20th 2009 10:35AM (Cinematical)
My marketing teacher in college pointed out that advertising tends to hold on to stereotypes much longer than any other form of media. I notice it particularly in commercials, where the woman is always the one cleaning the house, the man is the handyman, etc. Obviously companies are much more sensitive to portraying racism, but it's quite possible that some marketing minds might be thinking "Black man with gun in hand = gang member, so let's show he's a cop so people won't get that idea."

I don't think its a plot. It's just that marketing tends to go with generalizations in order to make an impression on the widest number of people.
