I would use these for FFXIII on the PS3, so the sound could be as gorgeous as the looks. I would use them to listen to the new Ludacris album. And of course I would call my girlfriend.
Oh man. Looking at this device so blindly, so PERFECTLY its hard to realize things that are wrong, huh? Multi tasking a security flaw? Thats really grasping at straws. Like some coder/expoliter would make his code something that would be noticeable by a WebOS style multitasking? It would probably be a background process, wouldnt it? Remember the SMS Safari exploit from blackhat? How easy it was to do? That was just a simple hole. Jailbreaking, yes, is not Apple's fault. (On a side note, I will say unlocking this thing is a good idea, but Microsim? really?) Adobe's implementation on Os X has NO affect on how it would render on here. Look at the the Nokia N900. It does flash BEAUTIFULLY, no issues. I can play a game, watch Adult Swim video if I want. Now yeah, Flash was taken out of Firefox mobile a bit ago, But that was a workaround plugin that was actually Flash for desktop linux squeezed into a phone. Nokia's built in browser works great, I use flash constantly. Doesn't even lag my system. Look at Skyfire. Works pretty well, right? And your ONE example of somebody ditching a netbook because they didn't like isn't indicative of a market that expects 40 million to ship in 2010 by some estimates, a growth of 20%. This will not be the device to get old people to use computers, to make them less scared. Old people will NOT like a cramped touchscreen keyboard anymore than a cramped netbook keyboard. They did NOT design this with them in mind, they're not the ones would pay for a 3G connection so they can check their twitter everywhere. This device is definitely Apple's must underwheming device in a long time.
Like someone above me said, this article is pure fanboy denial. How is this pad a winner? Where does it innovate? What does it do that a smartphone can't do? So why have it? Just for the bigger screen? You say multitasking isn't a big. But on a bigger screened device that doesn't do calls, you may use it pretty often. Wouldn't it be nice to surt the web AND listen to music? Music with iWork? Pandora with iWork? There is no excuse that I shouldn't be able to do this. OH MY GOD FLASH IS SUCH A SECURITY ISSUE ARRRRGH. As if the iPhone OS hasn't had worms and patches that took a LONG time to be patched? Everything has holes, but that is NOT the reason Apple didn't include it. Apple alienated Adobe, and now they pay the price. Whether or not you PERSONALLY don't think Flash is a necessity is a must, this is different than an iPhone. You're going to be sitting down, doing more dedicated browsing and not just checking your stocks. If my smartphone can flash almost flawlessly, Apple has no excuse. I love my Apple products, I read TUAW every day. But these missing features, and various others we've all read, are going to make sure this thing is a niche device, boring and uninspired. The average consumer WILL just go with a netbook, and therein lies the problem.
I hate to say it like other people have, but maybe I'd look at this if it had an app store or a CFW. If I could play SNES9x on here, some old PS1 games I could rip, and run AIM on here? With a bluetooth keyboard? Maybe even google docs if the browser was good enough? It'd be an ultra portable netbook for me at that point. But, for what I get, at such a ridiculous price point, I see this thing going the way of the Game Gear in less than 2 years.
