I liked the original voice acting. I'm a big David Lynch fan, who tends to have his actors speaking in clipped, awkward ways on purpose. It was hyperrealism, and in the Silent Hill universe it worked great most of the time. I bet the real reason is more technical- original audio quality isn't up to snuff- as well as a matter of not being able to find many voice actors to pay royalties or some such. Also, the Detective in 3 died shortly after that game released.
BUT, I look forward to the new voice work, as it's a good reason for me to get yet another copy of the games. I already have three different copies of 2...
At the end of the 80's film "Crossroads" (no, no, not the Britney movie, gah) Ralph Macchio, once a nieve classically trained guitarist from Juilliard, makes a deal with the devil at the crossroads for the soul of his hero and mentor, if he can best the devil's best guitar player, who happens to be Steve Vai. The two rip out blues and metal solos in an epic back and forth contest, Vai eventually rips into a face-melting solo that made him a guitar legend, and Macchio responds to by tearing into Paganini's Caprice #5, a classical piece that Vai is helpless to replicate. Freakin' glorious. Probably on Youtube..
The Grandparent's farm. Only a couple hours away, rural, self-sustaining food and livestock with geo-thermal heating and cooling to get through any weather without electricity- we can watch in comfort as the handful of corpses that actually make their way out there freeze during the winter, or fester into goo during the Iowa summer. And on top of that, everyone owns guns.
Twice I experienced sleep paralysis. I opened my eyes, but was unable to move, and there was a tall, 9-10' shadowy figure leaning over me, with one big hand holding me down. Absolutely scary, I didn't know what it was at the time.
I've seen that faceplate up close and it is a beautiful sight. My roomie is buying me the game for my birthday, as it falls within a couple days of the release. Granted, he's also incredibly psyched about the game- who wouldn't be? People who are dead inside, that's who.
The original Final Fight always holds a special place in my little heart. I used to gather all the change I could find around the house when I was in 2nd grade, go up to the private grocery store after school, cash in, and start playing. While better have come and gone and it certainly wasn't the first, whenever I have to describe a side scroller beat-em-up to the uninitiated, I always say 'It's a Final Fight-style game'. Haggar for Presidente!
Silent Hill Collection will be on PlayStation 3 only, this fall [Update: PS3 exclusive for 'right now']
