Cyborg would not beat ANY decent male contender at 135 or 145.

James Toney Demonstrates Willingness to Put a Price on His Dignity at UFC 118

Aug 29th 2010 7:41PM (MMA Fighting)
Great article but I take some issue with this comment:

"I hope someone with the hand speed and the pretty punching skills that boxing aficionados always point to actually took the time to sit down and bear witness, and I hope it lit a fire under him. I hope on Monday he finds an MMA gym and starts working on his sprawl, if for no other reason than to show the world that Toney isn't the best that boxing can do."

By definition wouldn't a fighter in an MMA fight who spent any serious amount of time on his ground skills and sprawl be a mixed-martial artist as well?

Lots of MMA fighters have come from boxing backgrounds (Davis, Noons, etc.) we stop calling them boxers once they start fighting MMA. In other words, if a boxer takes it as seriously as you are suggesting it won't even be an MMA vs Boxing fight, it will just be an MMA fight.

UFC 117: Anderson Silva Beats Chael Sonnen in a Stunner

Aug 8th 2010 1:01AM (MMA Fighting)
Props to Sonnen.

It wouldn't be out of the question to give him an immediate rematch based on his performance. I'd prefer to see him get a rematch against Maia though and if he wins that throw him in with the Silva/Belfort winner.

Also, just curious where you were getting your fight metric numbers from? I looked it up and they gave the fight to Mo across the board.

Performance Rating: Mo 59 to Gegard 46
Strikescore: Mo 334 to Gegard 292
GrappleScore: Mo 88 to Gegard 75
Total: Mo 422 to Gegard 367

Dream 15: Aoki, Mousasi Bounce Back With Big Wins

If you think Mousasi won that fight you have no business talking about judging. He got completely controlled the entire 25 minutes. Explain to me how you justify giving him 3 rounds when he spent 90% of the fight on his back unable to mount any credible offence. Yes, he landed more strikes than Mo but virtually ALL of them were from his back. Ever punch someone from off your back? There is very little power behind punches thrown from that position. Even Gegard readily admits he lost that fight.

"it's getting so bad that if a wrestler just gets a take down all he has to do is stay on top of his opponent and he'll win a decision." This is easier said than done. All you have to do is take down a professionally trained athlete who knew wrestling was going to be part of the fight. If you can't stop the takedown and you can't get up, guess what? You don't deserve to win the fight.

Ex-WWE Star Batista Hasn't Signed With Strikeforce

Jun 21st 2010 2:29PM (MMA Fighting)
@James actually Brock is 295 lbs. He is listed at 265 because that is the upper-limit for a Heavyweight in MMA. He cuts down to be able to fight in that weight class just like a few other guys in the UFC (see: Carwin, Shane).

Thanks for clearing that up for me Steven.

Proposed NCAA Hockey Rules Changes Not Good for Sport

Jun 13th 2010 8:00PM (Fanhouse NHL Blog)
"icing would be waved off if an attacking player would reach the puck before a defending player -- are rather mundane and agreeable."

I'd argue that this one isn't mundane and agreeable.

"Touch" icing forces one of the most dangerous plays in hockey. The amount of players I've seen seriously injure themselves racing for an icing call is ridiculous. I've long been an advocate of no-touch icing for all levels of hockey. The other rule changes may be stupid but this is the only one that will make the game more dangerous. In a league where players are meant to be students first and athletes second that should be unacceptable.

Money To Blow? The 11 Worst Sports Contracts of the Last Decade

May 4th 2010 10:12AM (Streetlevel)
Rick DiPietro signed what might be the worst contract in pro hockey history.

The total dollar value of the deal isn't as bad as anything on here ($68 Million total) but the guy has played only 11 games in the last two seasons and he is going to count against the salary cap for another 11 years. He is being paid like an elite goaltender but his injury history will make it a surprise if he is ever a major player again.

His deal is guaranteed (unlike many other horrible contracts) and he is completely untradable. His contract could handcuff his franchise for a decade.

Favre Owes Vikings More Than Charade

May 1st 2010 11:11AM (Fanhouse - Jay Mariotti)
"the team that didn't draft Tim Tebow or Jimmy Clausen with the 30th pick of the first round because Favre"

I'm pretty sure Tebow was off the board by then. As much as I hate Favre's "will he or won't he" distraction I find it impossible to feel sorry for the Vikings. Its their job to tell him they need to know what he is going to do one way or another because, you know, they are trying to run a professional football team.
