April Fools: Nyko offers 3D glasses for 3DS

Apr 4th 2011 8:27AM (Joystiq)
I'm wondering if the NGP will offer 3D. Could be done through passive or active shutter glasses fairly simply. The latter would use bluetooth to sync. The former would require some kind of polarizing layer over the screen.

Rumor: Xbox Dashboard update to add 1GB of DVD storage

Mar 30th 2011 11:13AM (Joystiq)
Sony announced something similar some time back - a 66GB blu ray disc. I assume it allows the disc to hold extra content but also makes it harder to duplicate / distribute.

Mobile version of EVE Online demoed for smartphones and tablets

Mar 29th 2011 9:36AM (Joystiq)
I'm surprised more games don't do this. In Lord of the Rings Online (for example) there are locations with auction houses, crafting tables, vendors etc. Players can fast travel from one place to another already so why not ship an app that allows the player to do stuff without logging in? An app could allow a char to read their mail, craft, bid / post items, maybe buy some common materials and generally do their housekeeping activities. More sophisticated, one could even envisage some locations being presented as 2d top down fashion so someone can even move around some points of the map, maybe interacting with NPCs vendors like they would in the full client. Perhaps the client would have to restrict movements to safe areas like towns but it would still be useful.

EA: 1.5 million The Old Republic beta tester applicants can't be wrong

Mar 17th 2011 8:42AM (Joystiq)
Who doesn't want to play a game for free? The question is how many people stick around if the game is a) as dull as dishwater, b) crashes all the time, c) has little content, d) is fundamentally broken, e) commands a stupid monthly sub f) nickels & dimes people to death. EA had better hope none of those things are the case. Let's not forget what happened to the last Star Wars MMO.

Analysts explain, critique Guitar Hero's demise

Feb 11th 2011 11:35AM (Joystiq)
I bought GH Legends of Rock for Christmas, mainly because Amazon had a good bundle which included the controller. I'm not surprised GH:LOR didn't sell well because it's a hardcore game. Fortunately I use the controller mostly to play Lego Rock Band and it works great.

That said, Lego Rock Band has annoyances too, such as the long load times and zillion button presses required to get from the start screen to resuming a tour. It would put me off buying future RB titles unless I knew these issues were fixed.

Toy Story 3 atop UK charts again, Madden barely debuts in top ten

Aug 17th 2010 4:01AM (Joystiq)
No one should be surprised at all that Madden barely sells in Europe. Very few people watch American Football and it's reflected by sales of such a game.

Games like FIFA, Tiger Woods etc. would sell a lot better though I wonder why people pay full whack for these titles. Their resale value is so pathetic and EA are so mercenary with their DLC and advertising that they don't justify a high price.

James Cameron, Piranha 3D actor Eli Roth speak up in support of 3D conversions

Aug 14th 2010 5:31PM (Engadget HD)
When you watch a converted movie you're basically watching a 2D image which has been vacuum formed over a depth map. What the hell is the point of that?

It's the modern equivalent of colorization. At best it produces a passable but still inferior 3D effect. At worst it looks bloody awful. In every instance the effect is lossy since elements are rescaled and moved around.

May as well watch the 2D version since in all likelihood the experience is going to be better.

Blockbuster avoids bankruptcy for now, but not NYSE delisting

Jul 4th 2010 1:41PM (Engadget)
I don't know much of Blockbuster in the US, but their Irish chain (called Xtravision) is great. It runs frequent promotions and I'd hate to see it disappear.

Fat Princess getting plumper with Fat Roles DLC on June 29

Jun 27th 2010 4:46AM (Joystiq)
@DrXym Whatever the reason (and my experience is exclusive to FP not other titles), I'm lucky if I get a latency less than 500ms. It's horrible.

The iPhone's display blows away every other display we've ever seen

Jun 27th 2010 4:44AM (Engadget HD)
@damo110011 I haven't seen a super AMOLED display but I've seen a regular AMOLED display. My HTC Desire has one. In normal use the display is superb - bright, vibrant and even. Where it blows is outdoors in strong sunlight. You can barely see the thing. That's the biggest issue with the tech. If the super AMOLED fixes the issue then I agree it's a good display tech.
