In my heart of hearts, I desire for the man next to me on my next flight to LA to see the ENVY logo across the top right of the HP ENVY 13 screen. The inner walls of my soul are screaming for him to make a comment. He doesn't.
From the corner of my eye, I see his gaze tracing the sleek lines of my machine. Sure he catches images of the Blu-Ray movie that I started mid-way through the 5 hour flight. I know his envy grows. I want him to capitulate and issue his own desire for this HP marvel. He retains himself, and I continue to nudge the machine in his direction.
At hour four of the flight, with the movie finished, my meeting preparation and review complete, I start to talk to him about my kids. He shares about his, the ages, etc... -sizing each other up. His laptop case hasn't moved in the overhead bin since takeoff. I am certain of his embarrassment. The HP envy 13 is causing this sort of feeling all over the country.
The last hour to go, I am determined to get this man to speak up. I start editing some recent HD video that I took of my kids during a family vacation. The ENVY handles it with no lag, and with pristine quality and speed. No skipping. My nerves are calm. The man flinches as his heart skips a beat in sullen amazement.
Seatbelts on for landing, my ENVY is quietly put away. Alas, have I lost this game? Have I not elicited desire and techno-lust?
The man puts on his pull over jacket as we get up, to say our farewell. His employee jacket says Samsung on the back. Poor guy. The ENVY must have torn him up inside.
