Take a (second) first look at SimCity's GlassBox engine, debug graphics and all
Mar 21st 2012 8:42AM (Joystiq)While I agree that complexity is at the heart of many great games (Civilization for example), a game doesn't need complexity to be great.
BF3: Close Quarters devoid of Rush mode, introduces Conquest Domination
Mar 19th 2012 7:42AM (Joystiq)What didn't you like about Rush mode? I didn't play a lot of BC or BC2, so I didn't feel a significant difference. I like rush; its a faster, more focused alternative when I can't get a good game of conquest.
BF3: Close Quarters devoid of Rush mode, introduces Conquest Domination
Mar 19th 2012 7:39AM (Joystiq)I definitely agree. I'll keep coming back to the Battlefield series for the large scale battles but its nice to switch things up. Plus I am constantly impressed with the sound and environmental design when battling in the close quarters areas like Operation Metro. It creates a feeling chaos and adrenaline that just can't be beat by any other competitive shooter I've played.
The importance of playtesting: What Portal 2 could have been
Mar 9th 2012 7:56AM (Joystiq)I think that story line would be worth revisiting now though. Being a test subject (or scientist!) in the later days of Aperture could be really interesting and reveal some of the links between their experiments and Black Mesa. I`d love a game that started as a portal game then took a huge twist and completely broke open into the Half-Life timeline. (With the Borealis and all that)
SSX review: The odd couple
Mar 5th 2012 9:09AM (Joystiq)Its probably because leaving a comment that only includes "It's trash" seems negative just for the sake of being negative, without helpfully qualifying why they don't like the game. They may have legitimate reasons for not liking the game, but without posting any it appears to be flaming instead of insightful criticism. On blog, where flaming is pretty common, it seems people tend to err on the side of caution and downvote.
Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is hunkering down for a big week
Mar 5th 2012 9:05AM (Joystiq)I enjoyed Nerf Now as well, but I went with VGC this week.
SSX review: The odd couple
Feb 29th 2012 8:55AM (Joystiq)I didn't get around to using the classic controls in the demo, the face button trick controls worked well. It was clearly mapped to the actions my rider performed (first button is the hand, second is the board position), similar to the way Assassin's Creed logically organizes the controls in connection with the characters body. The clear logic transfers well to the right stick as well, I'm just not always as precise with the thumbsticks.
I was always a fan of the original controls as well, but I feel like holding the four shoulder buttons on a PS2 controller was more natural that holding the Xbox 360 controller like that. Having both options was the right decision, but the new scheme seems to fit the new controller a little better imo.
It's the feel of carving that threw me off...
Glide on a mountain breeze in SSX's wingsuit races
Feb 27th 2012 9:02AM (Joystiq)I think it was just the basic carving that felt odd to me, but it could just be that I'm out of practice and the final product will feel right. The trick system works well too. I like the scale of the levels they showed in the demo, but I can waiting to play some levels with more colour variety :)
SSX demo descends on Xbox 360 and PS3 next week
Feb 20th 2012 8:41AM (Joystiq)I can't wait for the new SSX, but I would love to see another Stoked as well. I felt it was a great compliment to SSX's arcade feeling while still offering a lot of fun. Not enough people knew about that game.
Join the riverside community of ... Riverspring in Game of Thrones on May 15
Feb 6th 2012 12:53PM (Joystiq)I agree as well. The Game of Thrones story is already being told, we don't need to play through the whole thing as well as read and watch it. The world the books have created can sustain a whole lot more storytelling and flesh out interesting locales and histories that aren't covered enough in the books.
