There was a good article recently stating that Jobs was actually calling Microsoft out on the iPod killer. I think the truth is that Jobs knows with a Microsoft in the ring, you've always got to be on your toes. If PlaysForSure gains any traction, the game can be over pretty quick with Microsoft muscle behind it.
If MS does produce an MP3 player in direct competition with Creative and Dell and all the people that they want to be on board with PFS, they will lose customers. And, to the loss of iPods, Apple would be in a great position to open up FairPlay. As Creative, which would you rather go with - FP or PFS - one with 80% of the market, or one with less than 10%?
Apple will of course treat other manufacturers like second-class citizens, but they'll effectively crush MSs chances of owning the music DRM market. MS will have to roll FairPlay support into their products.
Sure, there are lots of "what ifs" too, but the scenario is not as far-fetched as you might believe.
I've got a (no where near as nice) projector (benQ 6200) hooked up to my XBox, and while it is great for playing 4 person Halo matches (each screen is about 40" wide), I find it almost too large for playing some games. Too much screen to look over, even when sitting pretty far back.
Now, this is on the original XBox, so it isn't HD, which I imagine would make a pretty big difference.
Regardless, I wouldn't say no if someone was offering.
I thought I read somewhere that Nintendo will not sell a console at a loss. Now, it just came out that the 360 costs $715 to manufacture. I don't know much about the Rev's specs (I guess none of us really do), but where are they saving 500 dollars (assuming a $250 selling point and ~15% profit)? The processor, certainly, but what other components could have that kind of impact? RAM seems too cheap. Graphics card?
I'd buy one at $200 probably, but that is only because I am married and really have to work at getting $200 approved by the bank. Anything more than that is a no go :-)
Microsoft's on track to portable gaming and media hardware?
