Nintendo boasts NPD success that 'offset' competitors

Feb 13th 2009 12:13PM (Joystiq)
Hi, I'm not going to give you any reasons about why the Wii is awesome, because you're mind is set. However, I would like to point out that the 20 out of the top 30 were on Nintendo systems. That statement implies software attributed to the Wii and DS. True, we don't have an accurate breakdown of the proper software distribution. However, it would be a reasonable assumption that DS software would account for a sizable percentage of that breakdown.

Report: Sony 'on brink of upheaval' - factory, division closures

Jan 5th 2009 1:43PM (Joystiq)
Hypothetically speaking, if Sony went the way of Sega, then which company would step up to complete the trifecta of game consoles?

History summary (not necessary, skip to the last paragraph for my prediction):

Nintendo had it first taste of competition against a dying Atari. Sega entered the picture with the Master System.

However, that was a short-lived one-on-one contest. When things moved up to the 16-bit world, the NEC Turbo-Grafix 16 came into the picture and quickly exited too. Atari tried to get back into the game with the Jaguar. SNK also tried to jump in with their Neo-Geo. In the end, all of them fell to the wayside against Nintendo and Sega.

The Sony Playstation came into the picture and made things were rough for the Sega Saturn. By the time the N64 came around, Sega was really hurting.

Next came the Dreamcast and we all know where it went. Sony and Nintendo were joined by an unlikely new challenger, the MS Xbox. Then, the triple threat match continued till this day, only with the Wii, 360, and PS3.

Seeing as how history shows that it never remains a two company struggle for long. Some other company will step up to fill that void. For me, it points to Apple. They've implemented gaming into their iTouch. While I can see them being content with that market, I think the idea of taking on MS feels like a epic story waiting to unfold.

God of War III is going to be the exclusive that truly establishes the PS3.

All the other previous games won't even count.

Sony Europe: Home will become a system seller

Dec 15th 2008 4:39PM (Joystiq)
Hmmmm, didn't a another executive from Sony Europe state, "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even [if] it didn't have games."

Sony Europe should stop betting on red.

Microsoft: Black Friday Xbox 360 sales trump PS3 3-to-1

Quite true, most informed gamers would never choose the Arcade. However, the Arcade was created to cater to the 360's "casual" market.

Microsoft: Black Friday Xbox 360 sales trump PS3 3-to-1

I wouldn't be surprised if a good percentage of the 360's sold were Arcades.

Actually, I would be surprised if the Arcades alone outsold the PS3.
