Hands-on: Magicka

Apr 5th 2010 10:46PM (Joystiq)
It looks kind of messy and kind of fun. If the chaos doesn't lag and things look a bit more crisp in the final product it might be enjoyable. For now it's interesting, if it refines itself into an awesome game it'll be masterful fun. We shall see. Fufufufu....

GameStop: Used game buyers uninterested in free DLC

Mar 19th 2010 2:19PM (Joystiq)
GameStop makes enough money with the used game market without having developers/publishers giving consumers incentive to buy used with DLC. I see people commenting on the "Trade in two get a new game for $20." That deal is a total rip and your kind of being duped into it. Here are the reasons why GameStop makes money.

Your copy of Uncharted 2? Well, it's been out for awhile, nevermind that it's like GOTY fifty-billion times, we'll only give you $20 in credit for it, $22 if you have the edge card. We're going to to over here now and sell it for $54.99 because people will still pay that much if you convince them it's that awesome of a game. We make $32.99 profit, you went with credit because you lose 20% going with cash and you like that solid $22. You buy more games, prolly used since you only have a $22 credit and you go on your way. Thus GameStop makes a like 150% profit and you lose out on getting around $40 cash if you sold it online and had patience.

As for the "Trade in two get GOW3 for $20" nonsense? It's the same as the normal trade in credit! All the games on that list are newer titles that are at the $20 trade-in amount normally, some are a bit lower but it's all basically $20, it's not a great deal. It's like trading two new releases in for a newer release and still paying $20 and tax. Don't even think that you're getting a deal from that! :O

And the car comparisons are dumb. Developers/Publishers don't get crap for a game unless it's sold new and GameStop's used system undercuts a large percentage of the gaming community that buy new releases and they always push used like crazy. Rather than offering DLC for free for used games they need to, like other posters have commented, make used merchants give a percentage of used sales back to the developer/publisher.

I try to buy every game that I like new because I want to make sure I see the promised sequel. I wish I hadn't bought FFXIII though because now they'll go off and make another butchered and raped JRPG. I'm happy buying anything Bioware though.

GameStop: Used game buyers uninterested in free DLC

My God, does this man actually think that even makes sense. Isn't he basically saying,

"Developers/Publishers should offer free DLC for used copies of games so that consumers will spend less money on a used game that the Developer/Publisher makes no income from but it will help GameStop push used sales which equal to almost pure profit."

That...that just seems like a dumb thing for any publisher to do. They're making no money, the customer saves money buying used (Which is good when you're broke.) and GameStop gets to sell more used game which is where all their profit comes from. Maybe I'm missing an element of the equation here but how could he think anyone would see that as anything other than a GameStop Win/Win?

L.A. Noire's mocap system claims to set new bar for 3D performances

I wrote a really epic response to this and it was devoured by the internet and wasn't posted. I'm too lazy to be intelligent so I'll just get straight to the point.

You have a point that there have been some excellent multi-platform games released recently, but honestly speaking the more awe-inspiring ones are exclusives. This is really the fact that the machines are different, things get sacrificed to make the game work on both. With exclusives nothing gets sacrificed. On the other hand it takes an excellent dev team and the desire to make an amazing game to ensure how great the game will be.

To counter your list I give you:
Bayonetta
Dante's Inferno
Final Fantasy XIII

They're meh in my opinion. Games that could have been better if they were more focused and didn't try to make lame ports or appeal to both crowds. :O

I think Heavy Rain left something to be desired when the animations involved facial interactions between characters. I've never been so disturbed watching someone make out as I was in Heavy Rain. D:

All the interactions below the neck though were done fantastically though, way better interaction there. ;p

Exactly! :D

If you grab some guy out of the dev team and hook him up to the equipment he may only achieve High School Musical level and that can't stand up against real and decent acting!

Seriously speaking though, finding decent actors that can be believable in a game setting is really important. If I'm paying $60 a pop I want to know that the entire development process was top notch and I definitely don't want to discover that the producer exaggerated something to look pretty in a magazine article.

New Games This Month: March 2010

I understand your pain of losing the interest in FFXIII. I don't even think it's a result of losing interest in the game so much as the fact that Japanese RPG's aren't nearly as impressive as the western RPG's nowadays. As a former, hardcore, ridiculously-obsessed JRPG nerd I can attest that I do not give a crap for FFXIII and my interest for Resonance of Fate is about the same. Japan needs to step it up for games now, western game development is really much better story-wise and gameplay-wise. It's sad but true. D:

Plus FFXIII is ridiculously linear and after spending that many years on a game and not even having the ability to revisit places you've been turns it into a rail-RPG which is lame. Viva DA:O Awakening ftw. As well as renting the other stuff. I'll play through FFXIII, Resonance of Fate, Yakuza 3 and GoW 3 but I will not buy except for the Awakening expansion. :D

Swag Sunday: BioSwag!

Telekinesis actually. As generic as it may be it's probably the coolest in a group setting. If I got the insect swarm that'd just be awkward and sort of gross and pyrokinesis would just make me feel like a psychopath and I'd have the urge to say "Flame on!"

...which would not be cool at all and never will be. Telekinesis is suave and way more applicable in situations to make me look cool. ;D

WRUP: Fight for the lost days of February edition

You sir, can work magic. I see you holding a controller and wii-waggling at the same time. Though I have no idea what you look like the overall generic image I have conceived in my mind is awe-inspiring. Thank you.

I'm finishing up Dante's Inferno and going back to finish the first Assassin's Creed that I got about 3/4 through over half a year ago so that I can GameFly Assassin's Creed II. After my action game rut is over I'll resume my Mass Effect II and maybe end up finishing up my first play-through of Dragon Age: Origins. I have this really epic pile of stuff to play. I already finished Heavy Rain, Bayonetta and Uncharted 2 this week. My PS3 is newish so I'm playing catchup and squeezing in game time since my classes are all simple liberal arts stuff right now. :D

At the mention of Pixeljunk though I really need to try out those games, I've been ignoring PSN for awhile now, I need to rectify that. ;p
