Infinity Ward responds to Modern Warfare 2 dedicated server petition

Oct 20th 2009 5:11PM (Joystiq)
Ugh, this is so silly.

Let's just debunk this whole partisan thing. We are creatures of opinion. Stop acting like we all get along. When's the last time we agreed on shit.

First of all, IW purposely kept this under wraps for as long as possible. Now I am no conspiracy theorist, but they saw this coming. Remember the whole "No LAN" announcement for SC2. Yeah, they can't be that dumb. They knew there would be this negative reaction.

In fact, IW has done a very poor job of being forward with the community. They say that they were going to keep things the same, yet change pretty much everything, and much less announce it with less than a month to launch, well that's almost underhanded.

Now, honestly I don't want to be hating on this new IW.Net thing before I can see how it works, but that's the problem. How does it work? Others and myself, you ol' time PC gamers don't like it much when things just abruptly change. More so to unproven grounds. There is often the promise of many great things, but rarely any delivery. For us PC gamers there is a lot of garbage to sort through to be able to play games as is. You add another layer of what could potentially be garbage, and you see where the frustration lies.

And as a last point, don't you console players or matchmaking enthusiasts pretend it works as intended. It doesn't. I've played games many and FPS and RTS games that use the system, and it occasionally lands a reliable connection, rarely a evenly skilled match, and as sure as hell never made the experience more enjoyable (remember de-ranking from Halo 2? And having a bunch of those guys on your team). Plus you have had that ability from the get-go with the PC, if you want to host private matches (called listen servers. No, really you do.). Now, it seems like IW is copping out with the "we need to help the stupid people" clause (tired of hacking, look for PBB servers only, it helps). Which is well, stupid. I've never has issues with dedicated servers, they work I can find a group to play with, and I can be assured a fun, quality experience. Versus matchmaking, which is a crap shoot. I mean hopefully the host migration will carry over (read as: damn well better), so you don't have to worry about the host rage-quitting and such.

I was really excited for MW2. I have followed just about every piece of coverage, gawked and every trailer, and run over the weapon lists a dozen times (I am a FPS fan, so sue me.). So, now for this which was a vehement day one purchase, is now been replaced with a feeling of trepidation, with a slight hint of "fuck ya'll" aimed squarely at the PC community.

Sadly, they (IW) don't seem to care, and that's that. Nor do they adhere to basic logic. That whole "if it ain't broke don't fix it" thing. Yeah, it's really not a bad idea. Apparently, IW doesn't quite get it.

All, that being said, it just doesn't make any damn sense. Yet, the game will sell like hotcakes, and alas, us PC gamers are likely just screwed, and will have to find our quality FPS mp fix elsewhere. Then again, perhaps IW.net will work brilliantly and discount my entire opinion. That would be quite fine by me.

This is my opinion, I don't like the idea of IW.net. Control being taken away from me, because it's suppose to be better. Now, you have a choice. Take this as you will, and formulate your own opinion based on your experience, or do what the internet does best.

Good day.
