Tesla's Musk says capacitors "will supercede" batteries

Mar 21st 2011 11:46PM (Autoblog Green)
think about iphone product cycles... the 3g can't run all of the latest software... and it's only coming up on 3 years old... a PC from 5ish years ago can't run Windows 7.. a Mac from 5 years ago can't run Snow Leopard... so no, it's not completely useless, but it's at the end of its life... it can't be upgraded any more... those are $200-$1000 gadgets...

imagine buying a car and in 4 years you can't upgrade the software any more, can't upgrade the batteries to the new more efficient batteries... that's a $25,000 gadget... right now, it's all new anyway, so the first batch will be good for a while, but tech will pick up pace like it does in every industry...

like I said, the only good I can see is if it causes prices of cars to drop drastically like every other piece of tech does after adoption

I'm a gadget junkie... I love the pace of technology... my wallet, on the other hand, doesn't

Tesla's Musk says capacitors "will supercede" batteries

I want an EV, but I hate to think of cars being like phones/tablets/computers/TVs where whatever you buy this year is completely outdated in a year, and not even worth having in 5 years... unless it means that cars drop in price as much as computers did... I still remember when having a decent (150mhz pentium) computer meant paying $2000+

If car prices were to drop that drastically, I wouldn't mind upgrading every few years

Chevy Volt dealer markup pushes buyer to reserve Nissan Leaf

Actually, yes. When you see a commercial for a car with a big giant $41,000 price (even if it is suggested price), you immediately think of the car as being $41k. If the dealer wants to mark it down to earn your trust, fine, but they should not be able to price it over what GM says it is in the commercials and on paper and press releases.

Example: If you see a commercial for a $5 foot long at subway, and you went in and your local subway had it priced at $9, you'd be mad that they were not pricing it at the advertised rate, but if your local subway wanted to attract even more customers and priced it at $4, that would be fine.

considering a "good" lamborghini diablo replica can be had for less than $50k and have real lambo wheels, emblems, etc and actually have a good deal of horsepower, how can this thing be $89k??

Lyle Dennis logs 5,100 miles in Chevy Volt, burns 46 gallons of gas, averages 111 mpg

FTA: "During the 3 months I covered over 100 miles in day (the max range of a pure EV) at least 6 to 8 times."

I wonder if during any of this time it would have been possible for him to recharge at a public station during the day, or not driven over 100 in the first place? Then he could have driven an EV and used no gas instead of using 46 gallons of gas (about $150 worth). Still blows the pants off those Prii out there... but the Volt is not a small sedan most people can afford.

Report: Toyota to launch Home electric vehicle chargers in 2012

I am sure eventually you'll be able to buy the pieces to make the "charging station" (sealed box, wire, cord with standard EV plug head, breaker w/ground fault switch) at lowes for $200...

Limited range of lithium-ion-powered electric vehicles to hinder sales

Feb 19th 2011 6:06PM (Autoblog Green)
Range is my only issue as well, but I've been watching my usage for the past 3 months, and so far have no gotten to 100 miles in a day... it COULD happen since I have to drive 25 miles into town, 25 back... two trips would be it for me. BUT, with the Focus EV anyway, since the charge time on a level 2 is only 3-4 hours, I could easily plan around that. Also, my wife only drives 50 miles per day, sometimes an additional 20 if she goes somewhere else, so definitely in my situation 100 miles is fine, especially with a 3-4 hour charge time. If we want to take a trip, we use the gas car... plan our days around whoever is going to need to drive more, etc. I'd say almost every 2 adult household would be just like this...
