Penny Arcade responds to our "hideous editorial," misses the point [update 1]

Sep 15th 2006 1:14PM (Joystiq)
If Sony and MS are removed from the equation though, what exactly is being compared? The point being made is that the products are fundamentally different, thus arguing on the basis of "all things being equal" (or ceteris paribus if you are, yes, a pretentious git) means the argument is of an extremely limited value. Basically the argument is that the philosophy of Nintendo pricing is a worse value for the gamer: but the gamer is not buying philosophy, they are buying a system, so all that really matters is what you get and what it costs.

A couple of other objections can be made to the conclusion: I can as easily argue that real-cost pricing represents Nintendo's confidence in their system - they believe in its value so much they think you will pay based on actual cost with reasonable profit. The other argument is, the accepted theory is consoles are sold at a loss with the assumption that the profit will be made up for in the software. So even if you accept the Nintendo is some sort of pound for pound bad value for the console, who's to say you aren't going to end up paying all that value back - and then some - buying overpriced games for xbox or playstation?

Fark.com sells their editorial, and the loyalty of their users.

Who cares. It's time to stop acting like there is any propriety or responsibility to a site like Fark. Recycle, repackage, nothing more than a pure manifestation of the concept garbage in, garbage out. Forcing at least a few of the comments to come from people with at least 300 bucks could actually improve the quality of the whole thing. This does not diminish the ridiculous self-importance of the poster calling himself Drew... normally I'd doubt the veracity of such a self-identification but I dunno, that sort of "I've been doing this for five long years... blah blah blah... I know best" worldly narcissism is hard to fake. But again, the main response is, who cares. If you read Fark to get informed than you're dumb as a brick. If you read it to get entertained who cares where it comes from. Here's the news flash: fark.com DOESN'T MATTER.
