IMO tearing with 4x AA is a lot uglier than vsync with no AA. Maybe I'm in the minority, I don't know.
What I'm saying is, for the best experience, your monitor running at 30hz or 60hz or 120hz doesn't matter if the game is running at 20 fps. No matter what, at 20fps it's going to look like ass.
Both the TV and console running at 120hz is what's needed for optimal 3D gameplay, and current consoles can't output that many frames per second without the game being a lot less detailed.
Also current TVs can only accept 60hz input, even if they use frame doubling or whatever to reach 120hz or 240hz or whatever, they can't accept an actual 120hz input for 60hz for each eye.
The number of commercially available displays that can accept an actual 120hz input is like... 5, total as of right now. There's lots more coming, but right now they're almost nonexistent.
