Jon Stewart kombats mortally with Supreme Court decision

Jul 1st 2011 8:05PM (Joystiq)
@vidguy Is it though? Isn't a nude digital character just a collection of pixels meant to represent an interpretation of the human form? I think the same arguments you make for digital violence in video games can be made with regards to sex. What is it for two digital characters to have sex? There's no intimacy, they're just pixels in proximity and rendering engines deciding when one pixel should be shown in front of another. I don't think the issue is that we can't define or haven't defined what violence is, it's that the US, in general is far more comfortable with violence than it is with sex.

Jon Stewart kombats mortally with Supreme Court decision

So I gotta say, I don't think Joystiq interpreted Stewart correctly. I don't think he was really taking a stand one way or another regarding the legality of showing such images to minors or whether it should be illegal in the first place. What he was saying, at least as I understand it, is that the double standard in the US is bizarre. Literally ripping a woman in half and watching her organs fall out of her is fine, but there's hell to pay when Mass Effect shows some "side-boob"? Or depicts an intimate scene between two individuals who are romantically involved? As he astutely pointed out, if her nipple slips out, oh man, serious trouble. Full disclosure, I'm not taking a stand one way or another on this either, but I do agree with Stewart. The views on sex in this country are really backwards sometimes.

@Jason B

In my opinion, that is an excellent point. Although I really don't understand social gaming at all...I would have never expected this to take off..

@Jenks What's even more disgusting is when you realize Joystiq made a typo and Zynga's valuation isnt $29 million more than EA it's $290 million more than EA...

I don't mean to hate, because new tech is cool regardless. But I have a helluva time with 3D, I just can't imagine playing something that requires constant focus.
