Italian PS3 owners want their PS2 soccer

Mar 28th 2007 12:42PM (Joystiq)
Still, whenever you buy tech that's still in it's infancy, to demand that every little thing work properly is kind of silly. Every console needs time to work out the kinks. So, to go crazy because Pro Evo Soccer doesn't work and act like this is some afront to Italians (the state of Italian soccer is an afront to Italians) is over reaction. Early adopters have always had this problem.

And why the heck would you buy a PS3 is your sole interest is a PS2 game anyway? Did this writer really need to buy one at launch if he intended to focus on a PS2 game?

Wii shortage is intentional, according to Gamestop

Mar 27th 2007 4:02PM (Joystiq)
Dear Nintendo,

Whether or not you are creating a shortage, I'd just like to say thank you. Though I've had to wait in some long lines, I've been able to make a healthy profit on ebay because of the Wii. For whatever reason, people will pay anything for your system and I been able to my hands on them at retail. So, keep up the good (lack of) work!

Love,

The difficulty of contact in game sex

Mar 11th 2007 6:29PM (Joystiq)
Don't know how much sex you're actually having, Tron Knotts, but it's not always about "physically feeling good". I won't argue that's physical pleasure is an important component of sex, but as much as action, sports or any other kinds of titles that appeal to one's psychology, so too can simulated sex.

I agree that sex can be really stupid looking and sounding as well. But it can be a lot of other things too. Perhaps what's needed is that someone takes a mature, serious approach to sex in games or else you look at online communities like Second Life, or perhaps Erotic sites where there is role play.

PlayStation Home, the free virtual world of PlayStation 3

Mar 7th 2007 4:44PM (Joystiq)
While I'm skeptical as to whether I'll actually want to spend time in Sony Land, what they presented today is no doubt interesting.

I think that almost all major companies, especially those with a wide range of hardware platforms as well as content, are trying to figure out ways to tie everything together. It has always been Microsoft's wish to bring together games, movies, music, hardware and people together. I think Nintendo is looking to do something similar. So long as these companies have a window into your, they're making money and better too. Sony is no different, and they're dressing up the online experience to first attract users and then bombard them with content. Again, Sony is no different then any other company in this respect.

So who cares if Sony is borrowing, copying or stealing from anyone else? Success will not be measured by who came up with what first, but who does it best... or at least, who attracts the most customers. Let's see, Apple did not invent the digital music player but they're the leader in that field. Elvis didn't invent rock n' roll, but he's the King of it. Nintendo didn't invent motion sensing controls nor did they invent the Virtual Console or avatars... but it's working for them.
So, stop focusing on who's first and focus on what's good for us as consumers.

Pretec's bulletproof iDisk meets its match: .500 Magnum

Feb 18th 2007 12:18PM (Engadget)
A .50 caliber a .500 are the same thing. One just has more zeroes. You can call it a .50000000 or even .5 caliber but it's all the same.

The Desert Eagle is probably the best known .500 caliber gun but S&W came out with the Magnum 500 to compete and because people like bigger numbers, Magnum 500 sounds more impressive then a DE 50.

Criticism of racial stereotyping in games

Feb 17th 2007 3:11PM (Joystiq)
I think there is definitely a limit to how black people are generally portrayed in video games, but I really feel that's reflective of culture in general. Movies too, feature very few black people in starring roles and I think that game developers are simply following suit.

Sure, no one cried racism over the other GTA's but there is definitely an outcry among Italian-Americans over the general mobster stereotype that is pervasive in our culture. They've been battling (rightly or wrongly) tons of movies and novels featuring mafiasos all the way since the original Scarface.

There is definitely a good argument to made that much of contempary black culture - in the form of music and movies, especially - is mired in violence, misogyny and drugs. And I think this is a debate that the black community is itself engaged in. One only has to read through the contraversy Bill Cosby caused recently over comments aimed at calling out such elements in the community.

I would like to see the roles offered to blacks expanded in movies and other forms of popular entertainment and I would also like to see more diverse portrayels in video games not limited to gangster titles or sports.

Slim dual-hinged Samsung U740 now available from Verizon

Feb 14th 2007 6:02PM (Engadget)
I stopped by Verizon on my way home from work. They gave me a story about how they weren't really allowed to sell them but since I was a "loyal" customer I could get one. So, it's available. I'm in Philly.

I qualify for a New Every Two phone but have to say, I wasn't impressed with the Samsung. The hinge seemed sturdy but I'm one of those people seems to always exploit even the slighest weaknesses of electronic devices. I'm going to order the En-V instead.

14 gaming myths exposed... sorta

Feb 14th 2007 5:50PM (Joystiq)
Joystiq in the year 2067:

Sure, sticking the USB wetware cable up your butt is faster, but is it comfortable? As diehard Meta-Matrix console gamers can tell you, games like Halo 100 and Call of Duty 5000 are just better when you jack directly into your spine.

And yea, porn will help sell Sony's Brown Ray virtual machine technology.
