Kojima website updates with countdown and mysterious '5'

May 18th 2009 8:32AM (Joystiq)
Strikes me that this is really odds-on now to be MGS 5, which will be the back story to Raiden.

In MGS 2 you learned that Raiden was a child soldier. The image in the teaser is meant to involk the concept of there being a storm brewing. Raiden is the mythical god of thunder and lightning according to certain eastern legends.

iPhone 3G first look, what do you want to know?

Jul 10th 2008 9:32AM (Engadget)
Does the speed of the 3G depend on the speed of the network in your country or is the bandwidth throttles. For example, here in the UK O2's 3G will shortly be capable of speeds up to 7mbs but Apple figures for spped suggested that the phone wasn't even stetching the current O2 3G netowrk speed of 1.5mbs.

Samsung's 40-inch 1080p LCD TV panel -- just 0.39-inches thin

Can anyone clarify, when it says "92% of the NTSC colour gamut", is that good? Strikes me as being quite poor if it can't even display all the colours of an NTSC transmission, yet alone an HD signal but I openly admit I'm not technically knowledgeable enough in this area to really properly assess the performance of this tv.

Games on more than one disc: do you care?

Nov 24th 2006 11:03AM (Joystiq Xbox)
My view is that within a two or three years, MS will announce that they'll be releasing games where the core of the game (i.e. the engine etc is on a DVD) but when you play the game the first time you'll be downloading alot of the assets (art, textures, sound, levels etc) from the Xbox Live! network. That way they can compete with the large texture sizes which will be commonplace by that time on PS3's Blu-Ray discs.

Circuit City sticking it to Xbox 360 gamers ... again

Here in the UK that would be illegal.

Xbox 360 adds 1080p, HD DVD drive is $170 US for November 22nd in Japan

Sep 20th 2006 4:11AM (Engadget)
This is great news imo. The 360 is beginning to look a little more future proof. I have two 720p HDTVs in my flat but when I get a big 1080p TV next year I was wondering whether my 360 game were going to look really bad.

European launch of PlayStation 3 delayed until March 2007

Sep 6th 2006 6:44AM (Joystiq)
It's amazing the difference 18 months makes. Back at E3 '05 I was salivating over the PS3, despite having been an Xbox owner in the previous generation. Now, I'm a 360 owners and feeling pretty damned smug about my purchase. Sony are just in self-destruct mode at the moment.

As a UK gamer, let me assume assure you that no PS3 at xmas + Pro Evo 6/Fifa exclusivity at xmas + much cheaper 360 + Gears of War = 360 win this in this country (probably whole territory). No doubt about it in my mind.

I'm sure the Japs will still lap it up though, and it will appear to sell well in the States at first just due to mega shortages.

Sony Playstation 3 launch details

May 9th 2006 6:25AM (Engadget)
Well, I'm open about the fact I'm a 360 owner and I have been really pleased with it so far. I was keen to see what PS3 had to offer as I'd have probably ended up buying one. Now I'm not so sure. The whole 'two times as powerful' nonsense espouses last year seems to have been proven to be nonsense (like we always knew but sometimes you have to see to believe). If MS can show off some really good titles at their presentation today they might still be in the race to overtake Sony.

Ageia to debut PhysX "physics processing unit" for gamers

Mar 22nd 2006 5:47AM (Engadget)
Sounds cool but I remember back in teh days when I bought a Voodoo 2 '3D processing card' as they were called back then, being a separate card to the main GPU. It hardly took any time at all before new GPU had this built in. If this card really buily on an old process like 130nm then it's clear that in no time at all it will be miniturused and put onto new GPU's or the motherboard. I'd save my PCI space for now.

Sharp to ship PN-655 65-inch 1080p LCD in June

Mar 17th 2006 5:37AM (Engadget)
I'd love to even see 1080i (!) here in the UK. All the so called 'HD Ready' TVs in the shops (of which there are now tons) are all just 720P, which to my eyes is not a huge improvement on PAL.

Talking of SED, did anyone hear Dvorak's comments about it on TWIT? He thinks it'll 'never happen'. I love the guy but he's such a sceptic...
