First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Golf R

Mar 7th 2011 6:40PM (Autoblog)
As a V GTI owner myself, I agree completely with Ed. No doubt the row-your-own is more engaging, but the DSG is a fantastic bit of kit, and the fact that it's an OPTION on the lower end GTI, but overlooked on the R is moronic. I think this is essentially the same mistake they made with the R32: lacking a CHOICE of transmissions. It wasn't the DSG that sank it, it was that some wanted a manual, and that was the deal breaker. It'll be the same here. Some will want the DSG, and that's gonna break it for them. Personally, I'd be buying this as a daily driver, and I hate using a clutch in traffic (i live near a major city, so there's traffic to be had :( ), so if I'm gonna need to drive a manual, I'll just get a used entry level sports car to complement my GTI :)

@paul: not sure what your smoking, but the DSG in the GTI has no hesitation at all. And the only time it won't downshift at speed, is in drive mode. In sport mode, it holds the lowest gear possible, and in manual mode, it only prevents downshifting if you try to drop a gear too early. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's a damn good transmission.

@slicecom: The DSG/GTI combo is also for driving enthusiasts. It might lack 400hp and a turbo the size of a jet engine (of course, the GTI's turbo also lacks the lag found in said powerplants) but it's a fun car none the less. It's a matter of preference. If you prefer the manual, more power to you, but don't bad-mouth something because it's not your taste. The GTI is a fun, toss-able, enjoyable car regardless of trans used.

Review: 2010 Volkswagen Golf TDI delivers potent one-two punch of efficiency and entertainment

Apr 14th 2010 12:38PM (Autoblog)
I've test driven a MkVI GTI, and from the pics of the TDI, I'd say they have 95% of the same interior items. That said, I don't think asking just shy of 30 for a well equipped model is too much. I am a little concerned that that price doesn't include the Xenon head lamps, or leather interior, but it's still comparably equipped to larger sedans in this price range. The problem is most Americans think if it's a small car, it has to be cheap.

MechWarrior 4 free release 'held up' by Microsoft

Apr 2nd 2010 5:49PM (Joystiq)
if MS is smart, they'll turn this around. It could quickly become a PR win by pushing it through and providing free hosting to the studio (even if it becomes ad supported).

There's far more backlash to be had from bad PR than there is profit from the series. I smell lawyers....
