EA exec: Wii to retail for around $170 US?

Aug 23rd 2006 3:14AM (Engadget)
That $170 price the EA exec mentioned comes from a Merill Lynch report quoting the price for the Wii at 19980 yen (I think) in Japan which when converted to dollars at the approximate current exchange rate of about 115 yen to the dollar gives $172 dollars. However, it's unlikely Nintendo will use a 115 yen/dollar conversion rate. They'll likely use a 100 yen/dollar conversion rate as they usually do when converting prices for their product for sale in the U.S.. That puts the Wii at about $199 if the Merill report is to be trusted which seems about right.

C'mon guys the Meryl thing was reported at joystiq.

12. Fossil Wrist PDA

I need something to enhance my super secret angent skills if I'm going to go to Iraq and finally find those hidden WMD's under cover of night. I could use the wrist PDA to store missile silo codes, crack safes, use it's laser to break myself free from handcuffs (Bond style), not to mention completely psych people out with it's awesomness.

Blizzard vs. gaymers

Jan 31st 2006 8:40PM (Joystiq)
Sid Icarus,

As ignorant as Steve's, etc... statements were yours were even more ignorant. Not every Christian on the planet is trying to impose their religion on other people, nor are we all homophobes.

To call the bible an outdated piece of paper is one of the most preposterous statements I have ever heard. Are the basic laws covering human morality (the 10 commandments) outdated? Do you believe that you should have the right to disrespect your parents, kill people, steal, and take a friends mate? This is also igrnoing that fact that the bible is one of the most important secondary source texts in history covering several time periods, and is one of the greatest compilations of past human culture in existence.

Saying the bible is out of date and worthless is on the same level as saying the Torah is out of date and worthless and the Koran is out of date and worthless. Way to be an accepting person as you seem to think you are.

As for the whole Blizzard thing, if they had not had references to heterosexual marriages, and that stupid "silly" joke then I may have been more forgiving of their actions. However since they seem to think it's ok to make fun of gay people in addition to keeping gay people under wraps I'd say they're dead wrong and it is discriminatory.

Openly gay people have the right to say their gay (even if it may invite jokes). It's their right to make up their on mind as to whether or not they want to say their gay, especially since their the ones who feel the effects of doing so.

Live coverage of Bill Gates CES keynote

Jan 4th 2006 11:48PM (Engadget)
I really don't know what's wrong with alot of you.

Hey let's criticize Bill Gates just because he's rich. Let's ignore the fact that he donates billions to charity, and will have all his money donated to charity when he dies. Let's also applaude Steve Jobs because he's not quite as rich, and because he's a turtleneck wearing hipster.

Gates' keynote wasn't meant for consumers. CES is a trade show, not a consumer electronics ogling fair. So yeah, he probably is targeting it to suits, and yeah it may be a little boring.

As for those who are saying Vista looks like OSX I disagree. It looks like an updated version of Windows. Some of the features in Vista may be borrowed from OSX but then again I'D WANT an OS designer to borrow good ideas from other designers. There's also alot of stuff in Vista that's new, not in OSX, and good. And before you start going and complaining that Microsoft is just stealing everything, look at a little thing called front row, and quite a few other things.

Blog debate: is Apple making a game console?

Jan 3rd 2006 7:53PM (Joystiq)
Apple could obviously make a gaming console. That's not really a question. Would it be powerful or not? I have no idea, though I'd wager it'd be souped up Xbox.

Could Apple afford to make a console? Probably. They can probably afford to leak the initial amount of money neccesary to make it in the console business.

The question is really whether or not they'll have good games. Apple doesn't really have any first party development capabilities. Could they afford to buy a company that could make games for their consoles? Yes, but it's unlikely that they could, and unlikely they would buy one. Would third party developers back Apple? Probably not. With development costs being so high for the next generation, I'd imagine developing for an unproven system from an unproven gaming company would take the back burner.

When Microsoft enetered the industry they had experience with gaming through PC's. With industry development costs being so high now, and Apple's unproven track record I doubt they'd suceed, and I think they know that.

Predictions for 2006?

Jan 2nd 2006 1:37AM (Engadget)
I think the Xbox 360 will win out. Sony seems to be making all the wrong moves Microsoft made with the Xbox. I think Nintendo will come in third yet again, but will have a higher market share.

And I regretably think that blu-ray will beat out HD-DVD (heres to paying 25-30 bucks a DVD, and 500 bucks a player).

I also regretably think Apple will gain market share, or keep it's market share (which is already obscenly high, they should be 0). And they will continue to charge an obscene amount of money for them. They will also release "OSX Pussy Cat : cats rule and microsoft drools," and "OSX Meerkat : because we're special" They will also change their slogan to "Macs make you indie/metro, because you're unique"

And people will still mindelessly idol the ipod. I'm sure someone somewhere is building an ipod church somewhere that's blindlingly white.
