I gotta say, I've NEVER understood the 'arrogant' Sony tactic. If he's talking to Sony fanboys, he's preaching to the choir. Anybody else either gets insulted, or rolls their eyes because they don't care (that's the boat I'm in). Back in the day when Sega did this, it was kind of cute, because Sega was obviously the scrapper underdog, fighting back, not a big monolith company like Sony is.
As for the DS quip, Look, if you're gonna get judged by somebody who sees you playing a game system on a bus or a train, it really isn't going to matter WHAT game system it is. Most likely they're not even going to know, they're just going to think you're wasting time playing some toy (while they're more than likely screwing with their smartphones 'cause that's the more 'mature' thing to do). Only FANBOYS would care what system it is.
As for 'the future' I own all the major game systems, and they all have strengths and weaknesses. The PS3 is a better video/netflix player than the others, but besides Sony exclusives like Uncharted (which are GREAT), I can't say I play it a whole lot. The Wii's the place to go for a Nintendo/nostalgia fix (and IMO the less they use their motion controls the better), and the 360 is the one I play games on the most (when it's not being shipped back to MS for repair). It's where my online friends are,and it's where my achievements are. Truthfully, I don't see that changing a whole lot in the future, and if it does, my friends are much more likely to go to the PC than the PS3, which is now an OLD system, just like the 360 is.
I'm obviously not a game company CEO, but if I were, my tactic would be to hype my system without bashing the others, or at least actually make some comparisons that are actually relevant. Bring up the fact that Sony supports a lot more 3D games (yeah, I don't care, but even so)....things like that.
As one of the, oh, I dunno....5 or so American Joystiq readers that actually cares about VF, really the ONLY news I want to hear about it is either 1: news of an American console release of Final Showdown or 2: a Japanese PS3/PSN release (only because PS3 games are generally region-free, making importing more feasible).
Everything else is just a painful reminder of what I won't be playing in the near-future. Sighhhh.....
