Xbox Live service for Xbox 1 games to be discontinued on Apr. 15

Feb 5th 2010 8:05AM (Joystiq)
Support for more than 100 acquaintances on the friends list is not enough justification to pull Live support for Xbox 1 games. The feature can be added and if Friends List support breaks in some hard-coded (max = 100) games, others are salvageable. Unless you are telling me that the original Live service did not supply Xbox 1 games with the actual number of maximum friends...

Nonetheless, to the issue at hand. It's been said for several years now, that unlike PC game publishers and the PlayStation network, Xbox Live will always continue to feature online multiplayer and connectivity support for all Xbox games until antiquity. Can we expect support for all 360 games to be dropped 5 years from now when the next console's service needs to be drastically updated?

I get the impression that this policy is the result of the design doc from a new senior network engineer. I'd recommend a committee run a third pass at the recommendations. Is this new approach sufficiently future-proof?

Halo 2 is still my favorite online game. The only FPS that comes close is MW 1. Halo 3's design is counter-productive to high-level competitive play. Most MLG players will agree with my remark.
Halo 2 PC does not have the same player count, extensive playlist, or the ability to automatically get a fresh set of opponents. The room/lobby mechanism works just like in Ghost Recon on Xbox 1 where you play with the same set of people in 1 room until you have to get off. After a while, the predictability and lack of matchmaking drains the competitive spirit. Halo 2 introduced the matchmaking model to Xbox 1, and it did so with a balanced game. It's a clear shame that support for it will cease in a mere 2 months.

This whole ordeal reminds me of the finicky nature of life: the lack of permanency, and one should never place anything of considerable value in the hands of others.

The whole DRM-covered, media-less entertainment movement should prove interesting...

Thanks for the link. I have fond memories of that commercial.

Hands-on: Samurai Shodown: Edge of Destiny

As one of very few fans of Warriors Rage on Playstation 1 (even over Samurai Spirits 4 on the Neo Geo), I will most likely be picking up this game.
