The hidden costs of PlayStation Vita: 3DS-esque battery life and mandatory memory cards

Sep 15th 2011 11:18AM (Joystiq)
I think one thing people are overlooking about the memory cards is that it could be done for quality control purposes. Yes there are a ton of cheap SD cards people could buy, but those memory cards are usually pretty slow, and potentially unusable for a game console.

SD/CF card speed comparison (I realize that this comparison is 3 years old, but the fact still stands that there is a wide range of speeds at which these cards operate)

As you guys can see, there is a huge range of speeds for these memory cards. Since I'm willing to bet that everyone would just buy the cheapest cards they could get, you would be dealing with potentially long load times (remember, these games are up to potentially 4GB). Everyone would be bitching about the Vita's load times, despite the fact that it would be the user's own damn fault for buying the cheapest crap they could find. These cheap memory cards are perfectly fine for point and click cameras, but they would be insufficient for the Vita.

Of course this point only stands if these memory cards are of high quality. I'll wait and see before whining and moaning. While I was initially taken aback by the fact that it uses proprietary cards, after some thought, it seems reasonable to want some control over the quality of cards people would stick into this device.

As long as Vita has the games (and IMO, the lineup looks great so far, looking forward to MW3's horde mode on the go personally) and the memory cards are high quality, I'll be more than willing to pay for the memory card (I'll just sell my iPod touch).

Why the PS3's lack of backwards compatibility is upsetting [update 1]

Oct 6th 2007 3:05PM (Joystiq)
As far as I know, there were 2 chips (EE and GS) being used for backwards compatibility in the original models. The European version had one of the chips taken out (still has the GS chip), and the other chip (Emotion Engine) was emulated through software. This became the case with the 80GB version in the US. This new 40GB PS3 apparently has both chips taken out, thus requiring Sony to emulate the GS chip as well. So I guess they could add backwards compatibility if they did that, but assuming that they won't add backwards compatibility because they are just assholes is wrong.
