Warhammer Online endless free trial now instantly upgradeable

Mar 27th 2010 12:30PM (Joystiq)
To destroy WoW you need to make a game that is not WoW. It is very hard to make someone quit the game while they are into it, it is easier to wait until they get bored with it. And if I am tired of WoW why would I go to a WoW-clone? And if I am a new gamer then why would I go to a rip-off rather than the original?

Developers should be carving out their own niche. MMOs have unlimited potential and yet we keep getting the same thing over and over. Few games that went the other route found their success: Eve Online and Guild Wars off the top of my head.

Hands-on: StarCraft II beta

Feb 19th 2010 3:47PM (Joystiq)
My problem with Starcraft II is that the game doesnt seem to be at the level of modern RTS games. It has the same scale as CoH, DoW and so on but provides the detail of Supreme Commander/Total War. In other words, I am annoyed that I am still playing with units that just stand and go pew pew pew.

That would be fine if this was a high scale game such as Total War (where units actually engage in melee and have sync kills) or Supreme Commander but I am dealing with a fairly small unit cap.

The game of SCII scale should provide far more control over units, such as cover, more abilities, being forced to engage in melee, sync kills etc. etc. But instead all I see is SC I with a polished UI (which is nice btw) and a graphical update and a few units added. Other than a graphical update SCII feels like an expansion.

Maybe I was expecting too much from SCII but I remember SCI being an amazing RTS of its time with cool unit abilities, cool factions and fun/balanced gameplay. I understand staying loyal to the original game but SCII took it too far, after 11 years of waiting I wanted more of a gameplay upgrade.

ECA members cry foul over auto-renewal cancellation hassles [update: Halpin responds]

This kind of bs will ensure that we wont be able to have a proper organization going for a while, since no one would trust another "ECA".

Darkest of Days postmortem has some bright spots

Here is the thing, the entire article boiled down to developers pitying themselves about not having enough cash for this amazing concept. Well, too bad. If you have only 1 million $ then make a game that costs 1 million $ instead of trying to make a game that costs 50 million $.

There are developers who became extremely successful by creating great games on a low budget. This studio is neither first nor last who will try to make a game they have no resources to make. I have no pity for people who lack planning skills in a business where you have to plan years ahead.
