68 percent of European Xbox Live subscriptions purchased at retail

Sep 3rd 2011 1:43PM (Joystiq)
Yes, and? With all of the stories that I've read and heard about MS auto-renewing cancelled accounts and "reviving" credit card info that was ostensibly deleted from the Xbox Live system in order to auto-renew accounts, I sure as hell would rather buy subscriptions at retail than give MS my credit card info.

I actually prefer the middle ground, though. I buy Xbox Marketplace points through Amazon.com, saving me a trip to the store, and keeping Microsoft's grubby hands off of my credit card info.

Patent suggests location- and traffic-aware iOS calendar alerts

Jun 2nd 2011 3:28PM (TUAW.com)
There are already iOS apps that do this, to a certain degree. I've been using OnTime, which is actually pretty useful. It uses the locations in the appointments in the iOS calendar in conjunction with your present location to alert you at intervals before you need to leave in order to be on time for your appointment.

It's not always 100% accurate, because it bases these alerts on the estimated time to travel what it believes to be the fastest path to your destination, which obviously isn't necessarily the path you'll end up taking. It also doesn't seem to take traffic into consideration -- if I left for work exactly when it said I needed to every morning, I'd be consistently late by ten minutes or more.

Regardless, if Apple can add traffic data into that equation, it'll be fantastic. I just wonder how developers making apps that already cover some or all of this (like OnTime or BeatTheTraffic) will feel about basically being shut out.

Quick tip: AirPlay with unsupported apps

Mar 3rd 2011 12:01PM (TUAW.com)
And as bugs go, it's actually pretty annoying. I've lost count of how many times I've turned off my AirPlay speakers (a 2.1 system connected to an Airport Express), stopped Pandora, and completely forgotten to turn off AirPlay, resulting in me missing calls or text messages because all of the audio is going to those powered-down speakers.

Granted, my case may be a little unusual, considering that I'm turning off the speakers and leaving the Airport active and still receiving the audio stream, even with no speakers to play it through. I suspect that this isn't a problem for most dedicated AirPlay speakers, since when you power them down, their AirPlay receiver probably shuts down, leaving your iOS device to revert back to local audio only.

Er... Pandora has supported AirPlay directly in the app for some time now. No "tricking" it required.

Report: iPhone 4 "more prone to physical damage"

Oct 20th 2010 11:44AM (TUAW.com)
With twice as much glass to break, and glass that cracks "at least as often" as the old glass, shouldn't iPhone 4 users be reporting at least 100% more cracked glass than iPhone 3GS users? The numbers here don't support the statements being made.

Kindle ad goes on the offensive against the iPad

Sep 20th 2010 12:25PM (TUAW.com)
I use my iPad for reading comics quite frequently. You can't do that on a Kindle, and while it can be done on an iPhone, it's difficult because of the limited screen real estate.

I suppose that if the vast majority of my time with the iPad was spent reading books, the Kindle might tempt me. But as it is, most of my time with the iPad is spent doing things that the Kindle just can't do, period. It's no contest.

The HDR race continues as TrueHDR gets updated

To my eye, the Apple HDR photo looks the best. In all of the others, the line of rocks is completely blown out and the detail is lost.

Depends on what needs charging. Likely iPad and one of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or iPhone 3G.

Uh... you've been able to "update all" apps with updates from the App Store app for a long time now. Definitely not something new with 4.1.
