Apple has mastered the mobile computing market in a way that literally no other consumer electronics manufacturer could.
The iPad introduced the market to modern tablet computing, much like the iPhone introduced the market to the modern smartphone, and Apple will continue to dominate the market in both areas until its competition cracks the code -- Form factor and user experience.
The reason the iPad 2 will be dominant is due to its amazingly thin form factor, battery life and its simple, concise and intuitive software.
Over the next 10 months or so HTC, Motorola, Samsung and everyone else will unleash an onslaught of Android tablets.. all of them will be marginally faster in terms of MHz, they'll probably have better cameras and they'll all be housed in a cheaper plastic enclosure with some variant of Android - probably skinned and loaded with bloatware.
None of them will come close the the iPad in terms of sales, and none will have anywhere near the iPad's level of user experience.
The video looks great.. and GT5 looks amazing in these little snippets, but I think that pretty much any recent driving sim that has the ring (Forza and NFS:Shift) would probably look about as good in this kind of video - at least within easy reach of the quality we see here.
Don't get me wrong.. GT5 is great and all (especially with a wheel) but, aside from the premium car models - which look amazing, the rest of the graphics are really just 'ok'.. not groundbreaking.
I'd actually give up the tedious menus and horrible loading times for track graphics that are on par with Forza 3.. which IMO were just fine.. and not really that much worse than GT5's.
I'd like to see a couple of (what i assume would be) easy fixes;
- home button customization.. I don't like double clicking to get the multitasking menu. I'd prefer a single click for the menu and double to close the app.. why not just have a preference in the settings like they used to.
- brightness slider and 3G on/off in the far left of the multi-tasking panel -- just re-configure the volume/airplay pane so it's more like the ipad
- active icons (like the calendar icon) I should know what the temp is where i'm at and the little clock and stock icon could be accurate as well.
@Abriael Great.. so keep the races (which 'educate' you).. and have the track available like the others for practice or other events. ...that would have been fine - I can't really see anyone being disappointed with that.
I mean really (be honest) - when GT5 showed those videos with the Top Gear test track prior to release... and then you popped in GT5, were you honestly happy with how it was implemented?
I wasn't.. hey but reasonable people can disagree.
Maybe I'm alone, but I found the Top Gear implementation in GT5 abysmal, and I was hoping that Forza could do a much better job.
Here's what I'd like; The top gear test track. full stop.
No gimmicks - just the test track to go around on and see if the Stig can be beaten.. It would be an added bonus if the replay cameras matched the BBC's locations so you could that great shot of the car blowing by the tyres on the follow-through.. but I'll settle for the track.
I don't see how GT5 blew this one with it's irritating VW Bus and Lotus with bicycle tyre races. Forza - take note.
- damage modeling that effects the mechanics of the car (not just online but in the game as well) - car customization that is as complete as the previous GT games or the other games.. brakes, intercoolers, wheels - effects that approximate the videos that PD released leading up to the launch (rain, dust etc) - track maps that have texture quality consistent with the HD preview - loading times, ui and menu that are above glacial pace
I'm just saying this out of frustration.. I've been a GT fan for years and looking forward to this game since HD came out after the PS3 launch.. it's just not the revolutionary game that PD is capable of making and that the series deserves
With their hopelessly large, wasteful engines, minuscule cargo space and cramped interiors, they represent the ultimate triumph of form over function and really serve no real purpose other than looking good.
But the same could be said for pretty much any piece of art or any triumph of human engineering that goes beyond practical.
I say keep the super cars coming and keep making them insane, I don't want to look at an endless parade of gray Toyota Prius. Give us something just because you can. And by all means, charge six figures to do so.

What happens to the original iPad after iPad 2?
Feb 9th 2011 1:46AM (TUAW.com)iPad 1 8GB $299
iPad 2 16GB $499
iPad 2 64GB $599
iPad 2 128 GB $699
(and 3G was $100 more for each one of them)
I just think having something in at an entry-level netbook price would be amazing

Gran Turismo 5 patch v1.03 adds tiered damage to online races
Dec 8th 2010 12:19AM (Joystiq)GT5 is a good game, but it's also quite flawed.
if you want accurate gripes how about;
- damage modeling that effects the mechanics of the car (not just online but in the game as well)
