If Gears of War retails for $59.99 (and there's some stores selling it for less), then how do 1 million copies sold generate $61.5 million? Does NPD collect European and Japanese sales stats also?
Kudos to Capcom for following Bungie's model. They will release an additional map that appears to cost $ initially, but will eventually be free to everyone. I think that's a great move - it reinvigorates the game after the initial buzz has faded.
People who pony up for the collector's edition of the game will likewise be given access to a second bonus map which won't be released until summer of 2007 as a free download.
#2 - I'm above 40 and the first generation of gamers. I was raised on Pong and the Atari VCS (what it was called before the 2600!). I play lots of stuff - Lumines, Uno, Halo 2, Counterstrike, PGR3, Links, and on and on. (Yes - I own an XBOX...)
Look out everyone - we were raised on this stuff and some of us are NOT discovering it for the first time.
I'll be on XBOX live tonight as soon as I watch my TIVO'd "Murder She Wrote" and get those darn kids off my lawn.
Just curious: How does everyone feel about the way the Halo 2 maps were sold by Bungie? That seemed a fair method: They offered the map packs for about $5.00 each if I recall correctly. However, about 3 months later, the map packs were free to download. I like that as I had the choice to wait or purchase (I purchased). Then, Bungie and Halo 2 would get good press when the packs went free. I keep wondering / hoping when we'll see something like that for a 360 game.
From the story: ...created with the intention of "bringing new audiences into the captivating world of interactive entertainment."
Whenever any hotshot director jumps into gaming and promises a whole new world of storytelling or interactivity, we usually get neither. Anyone have an example to prove me wrong? I can't think of one.
Don't get me wrong - I love PJ's work and think he means well. I just don't believe that being a successful director translates into a good game.
One step further: I could produce 200,000 hybrid discs instead of three sets of 100,000 discs since it might be that I have a better of idea overall demand than format specific demands.
