South Park Republican defends video games in WSJ op-ed

Jun 2nd 2006 7:22PM (Joystiq)
that's a fairly disengenuous way of putting it. libertarian-inclined republicans have become a minority within that party, while the faction in ascendence has been the extremely socially conservative wing of the party, who have consistently advocated legislating personal behaivior. on the democratic side, it's not obvious at all who is in charge. many democratic voters are in favor of strong protections of civil liberties, while a minority represented by certain politicians like joe lieberman believe in government acting in loco parentis.

demogogues from both parties do this periodically (as they did with comics in the 1950s, rock n' roll in the 1950s, and rap in the 1980s and early 1990s); it's high time people who believe in the right to make your own decisions in life got past the stupid red-blue paradigm and stood together.

Xbox 360 is April's top selling console

May 18th 2006 2:34PM (Joystiq)
well, if microsoft keeps it up, that's approximately 1.5 million consoles more from may-oct before the launch of wii and ps3. assuming sony will have similar supply problems as microsoft did (probably worse ones considering there will be more units sold in japan), i have a hard time seeing sony catching up in the US.

they'll likely win japan, and who knows what will happen in europe, but here's my two cents (and this comes from someone who really liked the ps2):

sony is mad with power and must be stopped, or the ps4 will require a mortgage. ;)

Religious rapper: Christ was a Space Invader

@spartacus...just to be a bit pedantic...have you ever heard of the jefferson bible? our most important founding father (author of the declaration of independence and the main philosopher responsible for our constitution, though not its author) believed in christianity in a purely philosophical manner, and rejected creationism, miracles, and even the divinity of jesus. his views on god were purely deistic, in that he believed in a divine power unfathomed by human beings, and he saw organized religion negatively. i'm sure if he WERE alive today, he would find more fault with the christian right in this country than he would with those who strive to uphold our CONSTITUTIONALLY GUARANTEED separation of church and state.

some choice quotations from him:

But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting "Jesus Christ," so that it would read "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;" the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan [Muslim], the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination.

-Thomas Jefferson, Autobiography, in reference to the Virginia Act for Religious Freedom

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State.

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Danbury Baptist Association, CT., Jan. 1, 1802

In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Horatio G. Spafford, March 17, 1814

It is between fifty and sixty years since I read it [the Apocalypse], and I then considered it merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherences of our own nightly dreams.

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to General Alexander Smyth, Jan. 17, 1825

i'm surprised that practicing christians like this crap. to me it seems to denigrate and cheapen the religion, and, frankly, make it something to laugh at. but i guess that's what our society does best: take serious things and make them corny and commercial; it's not religion, it's mcreligion.

for REAL christian music, check out gospel or gregorian chant.

Microsoft working on plans for portable gaming device

Jan 26th 2006 12:23PM (Joystiq)
an inside word from msft...the have indeed been working on a device for at least a year. originally it was going to be an ipod...but with video! then the ipod video came out. now it's going to be an ipod video...but with games!

like most massive multinational tech firms, msft produces and tests many, many prototypes. most never make it to market. this one might. and it might not.

Promoters: don't lie or hide your blog involvement

Jan 25th 2006 12:56PM (Joystiq)
i used to work in PR. believe me, this is only a small part of the equation. most every "preview" or "feature" you read in a game magazine or on a gaming website is spoonfed to the journalists by pr hacks. reviews are legitimate, but only because the whole reputation of game journalism is based on their legitimacy...

and this isn't just gaming. it's everything you read everywhere.

Game magazine subscription data

Jan 12th 2006 4:43PM (Joystiq)
yeah, but if that's true, then it's not inflated by 2x. it's inflated by a ratio of 6/5. so 2,000,000 subscriptions= 1.67 million subscribers...still a large number.

Game magazine subscription data

i read game informer and EGM, as well as joystiq, gamespot and IGN. each one has different reviews that complement each other, and each one produces different news reporting. there are, gasp, stories broken in GI that online media don't cover...BECAUSE THEY DON'T GET THE INTERVIEWS. and, conversely, there's news you get online that is dated once GI comes out.

if you really care about the industry, you try to read all of it.
