CES 2009: Sony shows off 3D display tech with PS3

Jan 8th 2009 5:38PM (Joystiq)
OMG... I knew I should have gone to CES!!!

Please Sony, make this happen ASAP (and please tell me it will work on a newer 52" 1080p LCD - and I won't have to buy a new one).

I would put my credit card on the line right now to play Wipeout HD in 3D.

PAX 2008 hands-on: WipEout HD

Sep 1st 2008 3:43PM (Joystiq)
I played it for 2 hours at PAX. The handling is a bit different than Pure/Pulse, but you'll get used to it. The graphics are insanely good (and probably still not for epileptics - one of the reps told me they were just waiting on the legal department). It's still the Grid system, so not a lot was unlocked, but what I played was awesome.

Sony announces holiday lineup, still believes in Unreal Tournament 3

Nov 8th 2007 5:21PM (Joystiq)
Where the hell is my Wipeout???

BOTH Wipeout HD (PS3) and Wipeout Pulse (PSP) were supposed to be out this holiday season. Why are they not on this list?

PAX 07: The last Metroid is a hat. The universe is at peace.

I can't believe she made Joystiq. She goes by "Eyes5" and the Giant NES controller she made is hanging in the front window of my store.

Wii Warm Up: If gamers are aging, should AO games be okay?

Jun 21st 2007 6:07PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
If Nintendo won't allow "AO" games on the Wii, then they should stop calling it a console for "everyone". I am an adult, and I want to play games that may be considered "Adult" whether it's violent or due to sexual content. I'd like to play more survival horror games in the same genre as 80's horror flicks and they REQUIRE violence & nudity.

Not all Japanese PS3 owners bought a game

Nov 14th 2006 11:49AM (Joystiq)
They're not buying games because they bought the system for resale. Once the end-user buys it at an inflated price, they will then buy a game or two.

Capcom asks: how about Dead Rising 2?

Aug 10th 2006 12:09PM (Joystiq)
Yes, a sequel would be nice, in an open (real) city GTA style. But first, they should focus on porting it to the Wii, a system people will actually own. Now that Nintendo is shaking the "kiddie" image, it shouldn't be a problem, and as much as I want to play this game (more than the demo I played), I'm not buying a 360 for this game only.

Goodbye disc media, hello downloadable games!

Aug 4th 2006 2:51PM (Joystiq)
The death of disc media WILL happen, but not as soon as they are predicting. You only need to look at the music industry to see how the progression will take place. I do not buy CD's, I don't know anyone that has (to my knowledge) purchased a CD in a long time. I don't know anyone that uses a "Discman", they all have mp3 players. BUT, the retail stores are still open because there will always be the late adopters, and they're still just now learning about mp3's.

Video games (like movies/tv/magazines/etc.) will go fully digital eventually, as new generations of kids no longer have the "physical ownership" want that we grew up with. Game stores will slowly lose market share, then die one by one as the business model shifts (over the course of many years).

I'm secure in the knowledge that my business will not be around forever, and knowing that, it puts me in a better position to plan for the future. I've always said that I should get into the grocery or restaurant business, because you can't download food.

E3 cancelled for next year and beyond [update 4]

Jul 30th 2006 4:59PM (Joystiq)
Now that I finally have a store, we were planning to go to E3 next year. I think part of the problem is that there's too much info being released at once, and the news outlets aren't properly conveying it. G4's coverage of E3 was pathetic... worse than pathetic really. If the organizers got proper TV coverage of the event... broadcasting the big 3 press conferences, showcasing the games, etc. they would have everyone hooked to their station for days... and the advertising money could help finance the event (lowering the burden on the publishers). Another option is to move it to a less expensive city (Vancouver?).

Should we consider the PSP dead?

Jul 19th 2006 12:10AM (Joystiq)
I love my PSP... BUT... I agree that it's a dead system. I had no idea that the games sold quite that poorly, it just adds to the depression of this handheld. I play my DS more overall, but I still use my PSP as there are some good games, and the emulators are a nice touch as well. Sony made a pretty machine, but their business model was flawed from the beginning and doomed it to failure. The PS3 will be next (in North America at least).
Now here's a thought. I have the ability to play downloaded games on both my DS and PSP, yet I still buy DS game cartridges. Why do I not care to buy PSP games? Has Sony just pissed people off with the firmware updates? Is it the overpriced games? I bought games at launch... and can afford to buy games, but I choose not to... and I'm not sure why... but that reason contributes to why Sony is losing money and the PSP is dying.
Playing an emulated FF7 on the PSP will be nothing compared to playing it on a Nintendo Wii when the market sorts itself out in a few years and Square-Enix decides that they actually want to sell product.
