Xbox 360 Kinect bundles outsell PS3 Move bundles 5 to 1 in November
Dec 10th 2010 8:33PM (Joystiq)As far as what Move allows you to do in a gaming context its about on par with the eyetoy.. It has done nothing so far that couldnt be done on the eyetoy., the only thing it has allowed is for it to work better in all lighting conditions.
The Kinect hacks have practically 0 to do with gaming.. I cant wait for the kinect enabled game where the kinect is attached to a robot on the floor or to an airdrone or to whatever else it gets attached to.. Great it gives robots the ability to make out depth, but and this is the biggest BUT what does it do for gaming over and above what they eye toy has done ?
Explain to me what it adds that makes it so fundamentally different to any eye toy for gaming ? Now let me watch you stumble and urr and uhmm, because that is the truth right there in a gaming context it really adds very little..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWqfNTT2dts&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL -- Watch this in full, its pretty amazing
I also think this guy makes some absolutely brilliant observations, here:

Again this time next year, when more games have been released for both platforms and they have both settled down will be interesting.. Microsoft can only hype the controller so much, it has to deliver on the hype. I cant wait to see your reaction and your comments then...

PlayStation Home celebrates two years, outlines next year's additions
Dec 10th 2010 7:48PM (Joystiq)PlayStation Home celebrates two years, outlines next year's additions
Dec 10th 2010 7:45PM (Joystiq)The biggest mess up where its concerned is the fact that they released it and had the open beta with voice chat.
If it still had free voice everywhere it would probably be huge right now, they have improved voice support again, but its not enough I dont think.
The other problem is that instead of adding stuff they promised such as the trophy room and the ability to stream good shows in Home, or the tv and radios talked about to stream music in your personal home to friends. They keep redesigning areas, frankly the new menu system looks really FUGLY compared to the old one, they are better off just completely emulating the xmb or pushing it back to the old tiles style. The new home square isnt as nice either.
It has great potential, but Sony doesnt know what to do with it, its making them a lot of money still I think. Sony has a huge movie and Music arm, they could very easily leverage their own studios so that they streamed full length tv series and films in home, placed adverts in between showings and actually made the cinema into a real film channel, or a real tv channel.
I still think it has huge potential, I still go in there very occasionally and have a game of pool and look around, but they really need to stop messing around with the different areas and instead concentrate on the trophy rooms and other features they initially talked about and promised.
The other major thing they should implement and I mean this seriously, is like the Wii with its Mii characters , to allow people to have their home characters as their console characters as well, the amount of options available to modify and customise the home character is huge. There would be some pretty crazy characters and avatars for the ps3 and it would help to bridge the gap between the two.
Finally I also agree with you, they need to increase range of motion, having the ability to run and jump would be great. They could frankly make it into a massive mmorpg.
PrimeSense releases open source drivers, middleware that work with Kinect
Dec 10th 2010 7:35PM (Joystiq)No they didnt http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2010/11/04/the-open-kinect-project-the-ok-prize-get-1000-bounty-for-kinect-for-xbox-360-open-source-drivers/
"But Microsoft isn’t taking kindly to the bounty offer. Bounty offered for open-source Kinect driver – “Microsoft does not condone the modification of its products,” a company spokesperson told CNET. “With Kinect, Microsoft built in numerous hardware and software safeguards designed to reduce the chances of product tampering. Microsoft will continue to make advances in these types of safeguards and work closely with law enforcement and product safety groups to keep Kinect tamper-resistant.”
That was Microsofts initial stance they wanted no one to be able to hack it. When they realised they didnt stand a chance they completely flipped their stance.
This is exactly as I thought, primesense licensed the tech to Microsoft to establish its uses, now that they have made a huge chunk of change from the Kinect sales they are going full steam into their own product. You have to guess that they have some percentage of sales for each kinect unit sold and Microsoft must have tried to buy them, but they obviously refused.
Look at the skeletal tracking, it is more precise than anything I have seen from Kinect, I really want to see the resolution and spec of their own camera and to see the price tag.. Kinect has been the vehicle to endorse Primesense tech. Just the fact that primesense can release an SDK that works perfectly with Kinect, kind of proves how little Microsoft actually provided. If they had access to this skeletal modelling and they had access to the hardware from primesense, then what did Microsoft develop exactly ?
UK Kinect shortages not 'managed,' says Microsoft exec (but totally welcome, we presume)
Dec 7th 2010 12:31AM (Joystiq)UK Kinect shortages not 'managed,' says Microsoft exec (but totally welcome, we presume)
Dec 6th 2010 5:35PM (Joystiq)I have a feeling that initially they shipped little, maybe down to actual logistical issues, but possibly to inflate interest, impossible to tell to be honest.
Just to affirm you seeing a shed load still in stock, looking at online retailers here in the UK:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kinect-Sensor-Project-Natal-Adventures/dp/B0036DDW2G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291673250&sr=8-1 -- Amazon.co.uk loads in stock also has 55 other sellers in amazon market place.. Amazon has reduced the price to £120, price is already beginning to drop..
http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/10296372/Kinect-Including-Kinect-Adventures-/Product.html?searchstring=kinect&searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&urlrefer=search -- Loads in stock 33 other people selling it second hand already from £115 -- really not looking good now..
http://www.game.co.uk/Xbox360/Hardware/Accessory/~r349590/Kinect-With-Kinect-Adventures/ -- In stock
Thats the three biggest sellers I could think of, now ebay:
shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=kinect+sensor&_sacat=0&_odkw=kinect&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 -- 7 pages of sellers , majority with inflated prices and a lot of them with selling multiple kinects (1 had a wall of kinects stacked up and on sale)
So if there was any shortage I dont think it is the case now, they need to sell as many as possible to hit 5 milion target and the price is already beginning to drop, which is not a good sign..
Now PS Move as a counter example:
www.amazon.co.uk/Playstation-Move-Controller-Black-PS3/dp/B003R7KV16/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1291673925&sr=8-5 Amazon sold out the controller on its own available from 3 sellers @49 RRP is £35 .. Interesting
www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/10667267/PlayStation-Move-Motion-Controller/Product.html?searchstring=playstation+move&searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&urlrefer=search Its in stock at £35 which is cool, 3 sellers from £57 huge mark up..
www.game.co.uk/PS3/ControllersandAccessories/Controllers/~r347164/PlayStation-Move-Motion-Controller/ -- Playstation move controller sorry out of stock..
.. The funny thing is that the Playstation move bundle with the ps eye is in stock everywhere I think, but the ps move controller on its own is being sold for more than the ps move controller bundled with the ps eye, its hilarious ..
I give the kinect till after Christmas before it drops to below £100.. I am waiting for it to hit around £50 second hand so I can get it for some depth sensing experiments / toying around with it in Linux lol..

Sony: PlayStation Move reaches 4.1 million in worldwide sales [update]
Dec 1st 2010 1:18AM (Joystiq)"No one has asked Microsoft to clarify what they mean by sold.. They even count the number of 360s sold as the number of 360s actually shipped, so it stands to reason that their sold is actually sold to retail i.e Shipped.. Sony and Nintendo are the only 2 console manufacturers that count consoles sold to consumers as their actual sold figure while Microsoft counts the units shipped to retailers as sold and claims this as the sold figure.
So actually my point is very valid ! " - Me
Sold to retailer or sold to consumer ? Huge difference between the 2 .. Stop being such a dumb ass you dont know the answer so stop pulling answers from your backside, this has never been clarified ..
