Apr 1st 2010 10:24PM (Autoblog)That's what I was really hoping for, a liftback version of the Koup. The rear lines of that car with a hatchback version is just what I'd be looking for. Genesis coupe as well.
Conan O'Brien gets Satisfaction from latest character: $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron Mouse
Jan 21st 2010 3:01PM (Autoblog)If Leno had changed his mind 3 years ago, 2 years ago, even 1 year ago, that would be one thing. But he changed his mind months after everything was already switched around. Changing his mind years ago would have created a bit of a bump in things but would have given everyone time to work things out. Doing so now has caused a huge train wreck because of the way everything has already been laid out, and it goes against everything he promised.
And yes, it very much does matter what Leno said in 2004. He gave a serious public vow on air to his viewers, and maintained that attitude for years, only to suddenly renege on that in the last several weeks just because the show he moved to afterwards started tanking. It shows a serious lack of character.
It may be difficult to put yourself out to pasture, but that was Leno's choice. Favre unretired but got traded to the Jets because the Packers already planned for life post-Favre and wedging him back in wasn't feasible with the plans they laid out, the way they drafted, and it wasn't fair to Aaron Rodgers. In the short term that worked out for Favre as the Vikings are doing so well. And in the long term, it'll work out for the Packers as they still made the playoffs this year and have a young quarterback to develop and build a team around. Likewise, if Leno said he wanted to retire or go to another network, he could leave and be successful elsewhere and give O'Brien a chance to grow his show, and they could both do well with little drama. But instead he's choosing to muck up a situation in a way that he promised he would not do.
And O'Brien certainly DID have dibs on the show. That was part of his contract...he agreed to not leave the network for more money five years ago, and in return, NBC promised him the show. That's why they're going to have to pay him $40 million or so to leave, because they had a contract for him to take over when Leno left.
Conan O'Brien gets Satisfaction from latest character: $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron Mouse
Jan 21st 2010 12:36PM (Autoblog)So now Conan, having been promised for 5 years that this job would be his, and having turned down very lucrative offers from other networks in the process to make this happen, inherits the show and finds himself not getting nearly the support Leno got when Leno first started out. Not only is NBC pulling the plug on him without giving him a chance to build his audience like Leno did, but one of the reasons Conan's Tonight Show is having such a tough time building is because of Leno's 10 o'clock show, the ratings of which are bad enough to ruin the ratings for local news affiliates and their 11 o'clock news broadcasts, and thereby destroying the potential audience leading into Conan's show.
Leno, on air, said that he didn't want to see anyone go through what happened when there was the fracas between him and Letterman. He then said, "This show is like a dynasty. You hold it and then you hand it off to the next person, and I don't want to see all of the fighting and who's better and nasty things back and forth in the press. So right now, here it is, Conan, it's yours."
NBC is screwing a lot of this up, so it's not entirely Leno's fault and I'm not saying he's "a villain" in all of this. But in everything leading up to this, Leno said he was willingly getting out of the way, and that he respected the show and everyone involved, and didn't want to cause any more animosity. If that were true, he would get out of the way, and be as gracious as he was when he said he was stepping down. He's choosing to wedge himself back into an affair after he said he was finished with the show, doing exactly what he said he did NOT want to do, going back on a lot of agreements and promises, and messing things up for Conan, who waited very patiently for a long time to be given this opportunity when he could have gone elsewhere years ago. So while Leno may not be "a villain," he has appeared to be extremely disingenuous about this whole affair.
