Oh, don't get me wrong, a major developer being axed isn't standard operating procedure by any means... but AFAIK, it's just rumored he's been laid off. But "Joe the Texture Artist" and "Jimmy QA tester", well, there's no real reason to keep them on payroll when you're just churning out (comparatively) small content patches.

It's pretty common procedure for game companies to hire more people when they're working on a big game or expansion and fire them after it launches, a lot of these people are effectively temp workers.

I've heard the size of each city is roughly analogous to the continents of WoW (at least at launch). Of course, the continents of WoW were rather thin and elongated, whereas the cities are more square in shape.

I don't think an entire population turning into Monkeys is up Batman's alley. In the comics, Batman isn't quite so myopic that he refuses to help people who don't live in Gotham. Hell, he started the Outisders in order to solve a crisis in Eastern Europe.

Is that any different to Defender or Statesman in the established superhero games, though?

According to an interview that took place on massively last week, the beta should be starting "this" week. As of this posting, it's 12 am on sunday morning on the east coast. So if the developers are counting Sunday as part of the "week", they have one day to get it up.
