World of Warcraft: Cataclysm - This is how the world ends

Dec 7th 2010 8:10PM (Joystiq)
Okay, so I'm definitely wanting to get in on this WoW action, but lemme ask a couple questions:

I don't have friends that play WoW, nor would I play enough to justify being a part of a guild or going on raids/dungeons. It's just not something I like or have time for. Would I still be able to have fun just doing the other content in the game? I'm a huge achievement-junkie, and that achievement system has my mouth watering...

Second: Is it worth it for me to jump into WoW if I've only got The Burning Crusade? I picked up a Battlechest the other day for $10, but I really don't have $60 at this time of year to get Lich King and Cataclysm (and that's IF I can find Lich King on sale).

I've been drinking a large amount of Coca Cola over the course of these hot summer days...Well, that and water.

Why do you think there wasn't Purgatory? That's what the church was. It's Purgatory and they were just waiting for everyone who was on the island to die (eventually, on their own terms) and now that everyone who is ready to move on is dead and in Purgatory they sat in the church and moved to heaven.

I can't speak for the first point, but as for the others:

2: The people who flew off the island lived, and eventually died and went to the "alternate timeline" (whatever you wish to call it) when they eventually died years in the future, be it from old age, accident, whatever.

3. There was no significance of the Dharma Initiative. They just were on the island, researching. Not everything has to have a significant impact. The Dharma Initiative were just there to provide backstory to the island, if anything.

4.It doesn't matter when/why the island is. It's just an island with mystical powers that just exists. Not everything has to have reason, either. It's just the setting of the show, and it's provided that the island has magical powers. It's just provided.

5. I can sort of agree with that point, they never really said much at all about either of Jacob/MiB's mother(s), but I suppose that wasn't an important element of the show, and it just wasn't something that needed screentime (more than the hour it got) during the final few episodes of the final season.

6. It was the heart of the island. It's what fueled the island's "powers" and kept it "alive". As I said before, not everything has to be true-to-life or explained. It's just the core of the island that needs to be protected.

Basically, not ever little thing has to be spelled out. Some things you can find out by piecing together other parts of information from the show, others are just left for interpretation.

What do you mean "explain the island"? Can't it just be accepted that it's an island with mystical powers? Not everything in the show needs to be plausible in real life, or even explainable.

The island is just an island, with powers, and that's all there is to it.

I do sort of agree with you. This whole season seemed a bit tacked on, as the story seemed just about complete at the end of season 5.

How so?

I really don't see your logic in this. You're saying that by the alternate timeline being purgatory, it somehow negates all of the other episodes and makes them worthless? If so, I don't see how.

A point you made was that they didn't stick to a faith or science conclusion, well that is a recurring theme of the show: Faith vs Science. There is even an episode in which Locke and Jack argue about their beliefs (Locke faith, Jack science) that is called "Man of science, Man of faith".

Duuuuuude....You need to watch this. This is definitely up there in the best television shows of all time. All six seasons come out in a bundle this September, or just go buy them individually. Or if you don't have the cash to spare, you can watch it online (in very good quality) on ABC's site, with only 2 minutes of ads per episode. (Site: abc.go.com/shows/lost)

Really. Amazing show that will keep you guessing the entire time. Everything about it is amazing: The characters, the character interactions, the plot (99% of it, anyway), the acting, the effects (the entire show, aside from seven scenes, was filmed in Hawaii!), and the soundtrack. Oh, god, the soundtrack. I've got Life and Death (The tune played when someone dies) looping on iTunes right now. It's an amazing song, and even if you don't like/want to watch LOST, go youtube "Life and Death Lost" and listen to it. This song brings tears to my eyes.

Damn...That episode was flat-out amazing. Just watched all two and a half hours of that, the two hour long recap, and I'm about to watch the hour long Jimmy Kimmel Live. Seriously, though, that was just amazing. I nearly cried for the first time since Charlie died. I'm not sure I get the whole alternate timeline thing, though: They were all dead the entire time? Like, purgatory or something?

Anyway, when Jack made Hurley the protector of the island was the most shocking yet fitting thing I've seen in any LOST episode. I also think the way they ended the episode was masterful. It just felt so...right. Six years ago we watched Jack open his eyes at the start of the first episode, waking up in the bamboo. Now, six years later, we watch Jack close his eyes at the end of the final episode and die in the bamboo. Absolutely amazing. This was the best TV show ever, and I'm strongly considering rewatching all the episodes just for nostalgia.

God, I loved LOST.

Not a funny one, but LOST absolutely sunk its hooks into me from the first episode. I started watching LOST around January/February this year (Started at Season 1 Episode 1) and I'm already a few episodes into the final season. Hoping to watch the rest of the Final Season in time to catch the Series Finale live. :D

I guess if I had to pick one memory, I blew through the entire 4th season of LOST in one huge, marathon, ten hour TV watching session. Good times.
