Super Mario Galaxy highest rated game of all time

Nov 17th 2007 7:27PM (Joystiq)
But, just because you don't like the game doesn't mean that inherently it's a bad game. I don't enjoy Halo series or Gears of War, but I can admit that they are well made games, just not up my alley.

And yes the game may ave not sold as well if it wasn't part of the Mario series, but if this had been some platformer who played the exact same way without the legacy of the Mario franchise hanging over it I think it would stand a chance to be scored the same or possibly even better since you wouldn't have the specter of all other Mario games hanging over its shoulder.

Atari posts $12 million Q1 loss. Who's got the will?

Nov 7th 2007 9:25AM (Joystiq)
... wow I watch the show and that sounds really dirty.

But even now the last game I remember buying from Atari was enter the matrix and that was a such a bad decision.

Nintendo flaunts mega-sized Wii and DS release list

Oct 11th 2007 6:19PM (Joystiq)
Oh my sweet God, grow up people. Yes the list has a lot of kiddy stuff on it but its the business. Nintendo is at least second in penetration of the market and with their lower development costs and cultivations of the system as something for the family they are going to get the glut of Movie/TV/what ever the hell Hannah Montana is tie in games. ESPECIALLY NOW THAT WE ARE ENTERING HOLIDAY FAMILY MOVIE SEASON. Nintendo is a buisness so having these games on it can't hurt them, see the PS2 for example

We as the hardcore, game blog visiting market are a small percent of buisness and all the bitching about the list is reaching Comic Book fanboy levels. The "Well If I don't like it they must be wrong for doing it and are going to go bankrupt on it," sorta bs. There are games on that list that some of the over twenty gamer market will like but that is often a question of your preferences.

Man surrenders back for Mushroom Kingdom tattoo

Jul 31st 2007 10:09AM (Joystiq)
And why would it matter if his grand kids like it or not. A tattoo should mean something to the person who is getting it. If anything I think you should feel worse for all the people who in 50 years will have to explain to kids and grand kids why they thought it was so smart and cool to get a Chinese character for "unique" on their foot. Or the number of white guys who have a tribal tattoo when they've got absolutely no connection to any tribe, period.

I've got a geek tattoo and it would be stupid to everyone else who saw it and knew where it was from, but to me its about a number of good nights with friends getting drunk together and having a good time.

Or is this simply a think that its Mario, would it be cooler if it was Halo or maybe gears of war? Are Zelda tattoo's fine but Mario is wrong? Maybe if it was just the question box their wouldn't be a problem?

Toys R Us ad shows Xbox $349 price drop

Jul 29th 2007 7:04PM (Joystiq)
All that small blurry text makes me wonder if this ain't some sort of rebate type thing, rather then a price cut. Cause to me a nonbuisness guy it doesn't make sense to do a price cut now.

I'm in the camp that Halo 3 will push systems. So why not let it get a full month of sales before you drop the price for the holidays.

And again this is in my non buisness opinion that no matter how you look at this it's a desperation / reactionary price cut. The PS3 price cut gave them good business and Nintendo (Fad or not) has been doing nothing but great sales spurred on by the fact it's the console world's version of a dirty mistress. If this is an across the board price cut it gives them a 70 to 100 dollar advantage on the PS3 with the elite and drops the core to Wii level.

Engadget & Joystiq live from Nintendo's E3 2007 keynote

Jul 11th 2007 2:21PM (Joystiq)
Nintendo's just kinda got it both ways from fanboys. Either they make a game that uses the wiimote and hear about tacked on waggle control, or there is a traditional game that doesn't use it and get shit about how it isn't a wii game cause you aren't pointing or tilting.

Metroid Prime 3 quietly delayed a week, try to remain calm

Jul 2nd 2007 10:26PM (Joystiq)
@32

Adding online or multiplayer simply for the sake of having it isn't always the best idea. Metroid is designed to be a single player first person adventure game. Not the biggest twitch shooter. Better to not have crappy multiplayer like there was in Prime 2 then to have it.

I don't think it will actually affect sales that much if it doesn't. People will probably be buying it for the adventure part then just the shooting.

UK repair service Micromart refuses Xbox 360

Jun 29th 2007 3:52PM (Joystiq)
I never got why this is a huge deal. You buy a 360 you buy a warranty that extends to just before the apocalypse. Or you take the risk that it will crap on on you. If your hear on joystiq and have been here for anywhere near a year you know that they've got a higher then average chance of bricking.

Microsoft should man up and start to address the problem. Ya' know rather then telling people, "Sure we punch you in the gut, but we take really good care of you afterwards." It's crappy actions, but they are a multinational corperation. They're going to have just a tad bit of evil in there.

Brother Bleszinski fears Wii, gives publishers terrible ideas

Jun 8th 2007 4:13AM (Joystiq)
Wow I think this guy is wrong but for a weird reason. Even if what he says comes to pass and every company is putting out minigame collections the market can only support so many of the differing types. You've got the Sport sim type (Wii Sports), the reproduce a certain action type (Trauma Center and Cooking Momma), the brain training collection (Brain Age), and then the random collections (Mario Party and Raving Rabbits). People won't buy three different ones of the same type I mean just looking at the DS.

Brain Age set off a storm and then every company that could created some sort of brain training DS game. Take a look in any Walmart DS Game case. There are at least 4 to 5. But they don't exactly fly off the shelves. They are the off brand store brand cola of this only with out the price difference. Which would you rather pay for 50 dollars for Raving Rabits which you enjoyed or 50 bucks for some knock off.

At some point the market will decide which minigame collections get to survive and become franchises and people will pick up on that. All Nintendo did was bring awareness to the idea that minigame collections can be fun to the main stream. Something that FF7 did on the playstation. We now get a glutt of JRPGs but for the most part now you've gotta stand out to really sell. Or how FPS's are now.

At worst you'll get a push and then the winners are picked and then other then budget minigame collections it gets left to the big boy's of the genre or the ones who think they are really doing something new.

Casual minigame collections won't kill the current games. Actually let me rephrase. Casual minigame collections are unlikely to kill off the current idea of games. It's in the likely hood of being struck dead by lighting while cross dressing and watching the second season finale of Lost. Its

Fortune: Nintendo is beating Microsoft and Sony

Jun 1st 2007 10:20AM (Joystiq)
Well good for Nintendo to have a sound business plan and being able to ride the hype they created to do what I think they were trying to accomplish. Be the secondary console. Though how long before this news spurs rumors of the Wii price cut based on the logic of, "Well if they are selling this much a 250 imagine how much they would sell at 200." And wasn't that the big sticking point right before the wii came out? That it was 50 dollars more expensive then it is now.

Got a Wii, and I have in my possession a 360. The 360 gets more play, mostly because it functions for my burn out X-box but also because Oblivion is a fun game and crackdown is really really fun. But when my console ADD kicks in I end up popping something into the Wii and save some lives in trauma center.

I don't the whole kicking and screaming that the Wii will kill gaming. Microsoft has a foothold with this generation and with a good bit of planning and some luck are managing to make the Sony domination look shaky. Next generation they will be around. Sony for all its mistake isn't going to leave. I"m pretty sure once they manage to get over this huge slump and manged to get to somewhere acceptable, if not the expected "We are the champions."

I think this is a great time to enjoy games. You've got a path in the woods that diverges three ways, a bit of overtime and you're wallet will allow you to walk down all three. Kombaiya.

The fortune article pretty much states what we all knew. Nintendo makes a profit on every console sold, every official peripheral sold, and all of the little gimmicky things like the wii hand covers. They are going to turn a bigger profit then the other companies. Not even dealing with the fact they probably have a smaller staff. Cheaper console that makes a profit on everyone it sells. HOW THE HELL DOES THIS SURPRISE ANYONE THAT THEY ARE MAKING THE MOST PROFIT? It just seems like people read the title and immediately got vengeance woodies.
