Future making hard choices about US publications

Sep 30th 2011 7:08AM (Joystiq)
I noticed that the current issue of OXM does NOT have a disc with it, but the issue is still like $7. This explains that a little better now.

New Apple store to open near North Carolina data center

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I've been screaming for this for years. The Southpark store is literally worst part of the Apple experience in this area. That store needs an alternative to smack them into understanding how a store should run!

Not sure how much the Best Buy across the street will take to it, but good news for every Apple fan in the Charlotte area!

New Wired for iPad issue out now, Adobe's picking up the tab

Apr 28th 2011 4:40PM (TUAW.com)
Woo Hoo! Wired has another update with a free issue! Adobe's paying for it? Hey Wired, how about the issues I paid for? Every time there's an update all those issues you brought, go away. If you want to look at them, you have to pay for them again. Again? Seems like I'm paying for that free issue, if I want to see my previous purchases.

Woo Hoo! A free issue!

Conde Nast decision exemplifies why publishers need to rethink iPad magazines

Apr 22nd 2011 11:38PM (TUAW.com)
This is mistake repeated over & over by magazine publishers. Something forgotten is that the reason publishers can sell magazines more cheaply by subscription, is that they don't have to cover the costs of the distributors cut of magazine cover price. When the publisher sells you a subscription, they make 100% of the price they charge. Smart ones cover the cost of publishing in there, and with ads.

To charge full cover price ( meaning their price + the distributors cut ) they are doubling the profit per issue than the physical copy. Magazine publishers have bought into this idea that the iPad is some new instant profit generating venture. Customers have brought fewer physical copies for a reason, there's something called the internet. Now because they've purchased an iPad they're suddenly going to become completely stupid and by a non physical copy of a magazine for full price, with a device that accesses the internet?

Really?

Of course it isn't their short sightedness or greed, it's that the market isn't ready yet. It's the consumer's fault. The print media continues to miss the fact that they are trying to repeat the errors of the recording industry, and resist stepping into the future.

Atomix is the iPad's first video game magazine

Apr 8th 2011 10:09AM (TUAW.com)
Of course I'd probably really like the magazine a lot if it actually downloaded. On my 3rd try, keep getting errors, but only after it took my money. Looking forward to it though. Especially if they can produce a magazine for .99 regularly.

Loved those guys. I still miss Co Op! They deserve a first look.

Despite strong start, iPad magazines not faring well over time

Dec 29th 2010 11:09PM (TUAW.com)
To address the major part of the article, why interest in magazines decline over time, it's a no brainer. You can't preview the newest issue. Unlike the physical copy which I can leaf thru & find something to catch my eye, the app expects me to just purchase the newest issue because they put one out. Huh?

If I'm going to buy issues blindly, I'd get a subscription and get each issue at at least 1/4 of the price.

The Pixel Mags people who produce iCreate & Digital Art realized this and added a preview feature for each issue. If more publishers considered this it may help out.

App Store price war continues, prices drop pre-freeze

Fruit Ninja HD is the one the article is referring to as being $.99 on sale. Originally it was $4.99, then .99, then $2.99, and now $.99.

Report: Hollywood interested in doing a Darksiders movie

Jan 6th 2010 12:48AM (Joystiq)
"Obviously, a comic wouldn't be much of a stretch for the creative director, given his past experience with the medium. "

No, what would be a stretch is if he finished the thing in less time than it took to finish making the game.
