MobileMe subscription about to expire? Don't renew it just yet

Of course they will. You pay to renew $99 for a service that goes free the next week? Come on.

A roundup of today's "Locationgate" news

Apr 25th 2011 1:42PM (TUAW.com)
Michigan traffic cops, border officials, and other government reps are already grabbing this specific Apple-created data as part of what they consider a legitimate search. However imprecise the data, it can and will be used against you in a court of law. If a little red dot shows up anywhere near a crime scene, they'll try to use it against you. (Check out flexyourrights.org).

It's not up to Apple to decide what it can or cannot do. They may curate their App Store, but they can't curate what laws apply to them in countries where they operate.

HazeOver dims background windows to help you focus

Just tried out Isolator. You're right, it does the same thing, but I prefer the HazeOver experience. Feels less rough. And it's only .99.

HazeOver dims background windows to help you focus

Apr 25th 2011 10:02AM (TUAW.com)
I just downloaded this at your suggestion and I'm loving it. It's like a set of automatic blinders that force you to focus on what you're working on. I didn't realize how distracting the mess of windows behind the active window was to me until now.

FYI The "delay" isn't annoying to me at all -- it feels right. Any faster would be too much.

PS I think Isolator is manual, like a window shade you have to activate.

Office 2011 Service Pack 1 due next week, improves Outlook compatibility

Can we sync our Google calendars with Outlook via iCal once this update is released?

Danish newspaper protests App Store censorship

Why is Apple telling anyone WHAT to look at? They make computers, phones and so on. The idea that Steve Jobs ought to be a moral arbiter for the rest of the world is just ridiculous. Nudity is not PORN. Gawd, you Americans just embarrass yourselves on a daily basis -- and you don't even know it.

PS I love America, so shaddapaya face.

Snow Leopard Graphics Update available

Aug 18th 2010 1:08AM (TUAW.com)
Too bad the update screws up Safari -- now there is a pronounced screen-tearing effect when you scroll up and down. (This may be limited to Nvidia cards, and doesn't happen to Firefox.)

As Apple's PR disaster grows, some say recall

Jul 13th 2010 12:23PM (TUAW.com)
Apple may be the 2nd biggest company, but it's still acting like a bit player. A larger corporation would understand instinctively that this issue needed to be dealt with more aggressively. Apple's insularity -- which helps it develop amazing products -- is also its Achilles heel. The reflexive fanboy response of excusing any and all behavior is exactly the opposite of what Apple needs. You guys realize that for most people, it's just a phone. If it doesn't work as advertised, it needs to be fixed. Period.

As for news coverage of this issue, it is a big deal and ought not to be swept under the carpet. It's definitely the number one item on Steve Jobs' desk, and there will be an official response shortly.

Adobe CS5 launched, wallets everywhere cry out as one and are silenced

Apr 12th 2010 1:33PM (TUAW.com)
Thanks, I know, I'm more interested why it was put in Web Premium for CS4 and then removed for CS5. Hope it doesn't remove itself if I upgrade.
