Blizzard acknowledges TOR's impact on WoW

Mar 20th 2012 11:27AM (Massively)
I think that TOR's design is flawed. They went too story heavy, and also the story seems to have little to no impact on anything. I chose one option or another and nothing changes it seems. I guess the nice thing about this game is that I can be a butt to the quest givers if I want. The real problem is that I loose control of my character ever time there is a cutscene (can't think of another name for it that seems right). And that game is full of cut scenes!

I couldn't get past level 12 honestly. I found myself literally watering at the eyes and yawning while trying to stay interested in Coruscant.

One of the main flaws with this game is that they put too much time and effort into the story system and voice overs that if they ever wanted to go back and change it (pretty common to change things in an MMO) if would be a monumental task. The game itself offers up nothing at all that is new to the MMO except those voice overs honestly; except the cool personal instances you just walk through.

But I guess that goes to show you that we all like different things. I hated Fallout 3, but most of you probably loved it.

Guild Wars 2 and the evolving narrative of a personal story

You have to play the bad ones to enjoy the good ones. It's the same with movies...watch the bad ones to know what you loved about the good ones.

Anyway, I think we get it by now Anet. You guys are awesome, we all are just lowly little consumers who know not what we do.

Just please....let us buy your game. Let us play your game. I promise the universe will fall back into place if you do this. Peace will be restored throughout the land.

All the World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria previews you can shake an empty fist at

@Mtor

Yeah WoW is great if your a kid with ADD and like cute things. Hell even the Heroic Raids in this game are nerfed into oblivion. The entire game is nothing more than a joke now.

I just don't understand at all. Can someone explain to me why all these changes equals a better game? To me it seems they are killing the depth and trying to instance every darn thing.

It seems that Blizzards desire to control how people play their game is absolutely destroying any appeal it once had to me.

If I were a Dev I would not at all pay attention to what this company is doing, nor try to copy it.

The Daily Grind: Are MMO communities inclusive or exclusive?

Mar 14th 2012 10:32AM (Massively)
At large it might be like one giant inclusive crowd. Yet, that crowd seems divided up into various groups that all have similar gaming and real life attributes. This is where it starts to get exclusive.

Some guilds will purposely exclude certain types of members of a community in order to foster their core values better than others. Other guilds in an MMO (or cross MMO guilds even) tend to be more inclusive of many different types of members, but exclusive in regards to certain activities within the guild.

I think that the answer is honestly that they are both. But, there are also aspects of these games that the community seems to require you learn their norms (and any other applicable subcutural rules) in order to be allowed into them. It is very hard to find a guild that has very patient leaders within it that will teach you all of the intricacies of Heroic dungeons, Normal and Heroic Raids, and top end PvP. Most seem to expect you to know your thing before you even join them. This is however based off of my experiences, but by and large the end game seems to have been claimed by a lot of elitists that would gladly exclude you from what it offers if they deem you unworthy.

In many ways we see a lot of resemblance to how human beings truly are in real life in these games. They fight over who is allowed the most precious of items in a virtual environment. You are expected to work and earn your right to those resources by complying with the values and other norms of the group. If you chose not to do this than you are stuck with PuG's which can get pretty nasty at times. You are allowed to have the substandard gear, but you also are expected to perform in some way that is at least average.

Again though, the best things in game require dedication and seem often excluded by those that feel your are unworthy.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is free to play this weekend

Yeah, just like those that say WoW isn't loosing its appeal after loosing nearly 2 millions subs. No no, it is just the economy, or cause WoW subscribers are being snatched by aliens, or cause they consume content too quickly now (when the fudge haven't they?). They finally came out and said that Cata just didn't get the attention it deserved (a year later) and they were stretched thin. Sadly, it might very well continue to decline because people just get through it even faster after they dumbed it down and streamlined most of the game.

And as for SWTOR, I actually am surprised this many stayed around this long. Then again I also figured that due to the sheer amount of content before the end game most people wouldn't unsub until around the third month. The real question for me is whether or not Bioware can keep listening to the community and add in game features that are desperately needed for the core of their fan base. If they can keep up and also keep pumping out more end game content, then perhaps that will help secure their subs and also work to retain even more players.

But, for me the game was just bad around beta. It was fun watching those cutscenes (what they looked like to me) and continually choosing some response. I wasn't even sure if it mattered what I chose. But I really did want an epic star wars game. I just hope that they learn from their mistakes, admit to them, and try to go back and fix any glaring issues. It will be interesting to see if Bioware and their Dr's have what it takes to carry an MMO forward. The only thing I think that could hurt this game is its over emphasis on story, and too little emphasis on other important key features. That may be their undoing.

Star Wars: The Old Republic subscription numbers stabilize at 1.7 million

Looks like a pretty successful game. It is going to need to change up a few things in order to make me want to play it monthly though.

The talent trees seem too generic and uninteresting to me personally. I'd rather see them improve on that by giving you better upgrades via talents every so often.

The questing and zones initially felt too claustrophobic and limiting. I am an explorer type of MMO player and like to look around and find other things out there. Small things like finding a Codex help, but they aren't that enticing to me.

Making a space station the social hub for each faction is a bad idea imo. It needs to be a much more open and lively place where I can see the virtual sky at least. Corridors and lined up NPC's in rooms stacked one after the other doesn't really look that great.

And there is more as well. I am not really a fan of Spell Ranks in any game, nor having to manually set a bind point when I can (I think these should be given to you or made more convenient to acquire if a gold sink is needed).

Blizzard may operate as an independent developer and publisher, but Activision likely has so say over ship dates and deadlines.
