Sep 29th 2007 12:50AM (Joystiq)as for me working for a top developer, i'd rather not prove that on a public board as i could lose my job should i ever say something in passing that maybe i shouldn't have.
curious why you need such confirmation? looking back at your comments on this specific post:
"I'd imagine to save on manufacturing costs, they use the same PCBs for both guitars"
being in manufacturing for 15 years now, the volumes that they'll be pumping out will have an insignificant difference on cost so your comment was incorrect and yet you didn't provide "proof".
not here to start a war, just telling you what i know

Xbox 360 Elite vs. classic: the test
Apr 28th 2007 4:57AM (Engadget)put side by side, a native resolution 720p, 1080i, 1080p on PROPERLY calibrated tv's will be *almost* indistinguishable from each other. the difference would be akin to a blind soda taste test only to realize you liked RC Cola the most.
but what i love most about reading comments are folks who pipe in who don'teven have the platform, bash it and walk away saying they are saving for a ps3 but they aren't "fan boys"
@ jbd6
i hope you don't take this personally but i have to dissect your post...
"Not holding a grudge against a manufacturer that has totally screwed you and willing to pay them twice for the same unit... I seriously admire that kind of gaming love."
i'm curious if you know aything about manufacturing and especially high end electronics manufacturing. having been in manufacturing myself for over 10 years, i can state, without a doubt, that the 360 fall out rate is within standard tolerances. the problem lies with how much people bitch about it; it inflates the perception that be design, the hardware is faulty. being an AVID gamer myself iththe first system iever owned being Pong, owning and to this day, collecting every system ever released in North America (yeah, i'm 36, old fart), there are only two systems that had serious design flaws, the PS1 and PS2. both of those systems had horribly designed disc mechanisms that resulted in folks buying multiple systems oncoe the warranty had passed. myself? i owned 3 different PS1's and am on my fourth ps2.
i'm not going to quote your second paragraph but will address the points you made. you didnt get a 360 for quality of games but you spent an extra $200 for a ps3 on faith? you wanted to get a 360 but odds indicate you would have to get a replacement? actually, odds indicae you won't have to get one. seeings how the fall out rate n bad hardware is about 5 to 7%, the odds of you getting a machine that wouldn't need replacement are about 93 - 95%. if i were in vegas and walked by a casino that had black jack tables with those odds, i'd never leave.
i will quote your third paragraph since it isn't as long :)
"So I bought a Wii and a PS3 and game on my PC as well. I'm dieing for all the great games that will arrive on both systems very soon. Waiting sucks. And if I had slightly less patience, I'd buy a 360 as a temporary solution. But it won't be long before there are more killer PS3 and Wii games than I have time to play. And I have full faith that my money is better invested in those systems. And there's the self satisfaction in knowing I didn't give my money to a manufacturer that makes unreliable hardware and doesn't care enough about its customers or reputation to fix their design."
are you talking about MS or Sony not caring about its customers? i personally know one of sony's north american engineers, he's told me that the CD drive in the ps1 was garbage, that sony cheaped out with the drive in the ps2 when they released it to save costs. MS extended their warranty on launch machines to show they care about their customers and ai've never read anything about sony having done the same (knowing full well that the drives were cheap).
i work for one of the top 5 video game publishers in america. so i don't lose my job, i won't mention who :)
ALL of the systems will have killer games, there is no doubt about that. the question is, who will have the best exclusives? the days of exlusive titles is winding down, and it's doing so quickly. it costs entirely to much to develop a next gen game and only release it on one console. there will be exclusives, no doubt, you just have to weigh which ones you would rather play. rpg? put final fantasy next to fable, i'm going with the console that has fable.
to everyone else that sits, waits and complains about the reasons they hate the 360:
1. they break. fallout rate is acceptable for manufacturing.
2. over heat. follow the instructions and keep it well ventilated and there is a 95% chance you won't have any issues.
3. they are too loud. do have speakers? u realll should get a pair, it adds to the gaming experience and i swear, unless the 360 is in your lap (no reason it should be, controllers are wireless), if are enjoying the game with audio on, you wont hear the drive.
4. the "i'm waiting for the new chip" guys. seriously? worst excuse i have ever heard. will the new chip run thegames differently? no. and i know what you are going to say next, "it will run cooler and have less chance of dying". see points 1 and 2 above. really.
i know folks will scream "M$ fan boy" and you couldnt be more wrong. i'm a mac user, i HATE MS. what i DO love is gaming. being able to see games in developmet that we are working on, knowing that the PS3 and 360 are EXTREMELY close in power and that the 360 has killer apps right now, on the shelf, go check it out... makes the decision for me easy.
will i get a ps3? i'm a collector, of course i will. and youthe best thing that i will like about it? thefew games that i cant play on any other system; the same reasons i love my 360 and every other system i own.
quit complaining folks, nextgen started november '05, anyone tells you different, they want something from you
Microsoft: January Xbox 360 sales up 18%
Feb 24th 2007 4:21AM (Joystiq)The “real” 360? DAMN IT! For over a year I coulda swore my 360 was in fact, a 360.
FACT: the 360 has had flaws, just as every piece of first gen electronic has ever had; just as the ps3 currently has. Shocking backwards compatibility? I could give two shits actually, that’s what my original xbox is for. I got a 360 to play next gen games. 120gb HD? Haven’t filled up my current one so doesn’t bother me in the slightest. And, I could always plug in an external should I ever need one. Overheating? Launch console here, never had one problem.
And this comment deserves it’s own paragraph; sub-standard specs?
I work for one of the top 5 game publishers in the world. Something I can confidently say is that both a ps3 and a 360 are a hell of a lot closer in their capabilities than sony will have you believe. Put this one to rest folks, that’s the cold hard truth.
As for the ps3 selling about the same and being called a failure, well, it has only been out for 3 months. It should be enjoying launch hype and selling out as soon as it hit a shelf, yet it is not. There in lies the failure. The exact opposite of that would be the Wii which continues to ride its launch wave.
# 62 – I can’t manage my money? I actually, I make enough to have all systems. $399 for a 360 was pushing it for me, $599 for a ps3? I just can’t justify that expense at this time. Will I get one? No doubt, when there is compelling content.
And now back rfom. I consider myself an xbox and 360 fan, no doubt, my console preference of choice. Do I give two shits if sony wins? Why would i? would that hamper my enjoyment of my 360? Will having a ps3 somehow miraculously make me stop playing my 360? Hardly. But don’t use quotes around words like expensive, no games or sony lies. That implies that those things you are quoting are somehow not true and they unfortunately are. And I can easily admit faults with the 360 but “massive” problems in quality? No more so than any other first gen piece of electronic. So quick to point that out being a sony fan but lets not forget sony’s history in that department. Backwards comp? I still have my xbox. $250 for an external HD? Hardly. Great deals can be found for under $80 for capacity that FAR outweighs what sony has in it’s box.
And before anyone say I’m a blind xbot, I love GAMES. Yeah, the 360 is my current console of choice but because of the CONTENT, not the system. I’ve been gaming for 30 years, my first system was a pong, I collect games and have just about every system ever released in north America and thousands upon thousands of games
What’s my point? Quit being so close minded when it comes to company loyalty. Bottom line, they are ALL after your money. If you can’t afford more than one, choose the system that’s right for you and if that is the ps3, do so for the right reasons and not an irrational hatred for the competition. Remember, competition is GOOD.
Tell Steve not to partner with Wal-Mart
Nov 3rd 2006 2:32AM (TUAW.com)first up, this whole misconception that people who are below the poverty line save quite a bit at walmart and that that helps them out in the long run.
americans unfortunately have been conditioned (yes, conditioned) to be consumers, whether they can be or not. i would challenge anyone who puts the notion of people saving money as their main argument for walmart to check someone's shopping cart at walmart who is below the poverty line and see what they are actually buying. sure, 80 - 90% of the things in the cart are necessities, food, clothes, etc. but i'd wager hard cash that most people below the poverty line still spend money on unnecessary things, money that could be put to better use than the newest disney dvd for the kids.
that is in no way a dig at people below the poverty line; that is a dig at our society and how we've been conditioned.
next up, i'll tackle comments like "no one is forced to work there" and "no one is forced to shop there" and "the walmart bashers want to use the government to prevent suppliers, etc. from voluntary transactions"
actually, when a walmart comes into a small community, it gets gutted as if by locusts. people who have been out of work, or soon will be because manufacturing jobs have and are continuing to move, overseas (walmart has been a HUGE reason for this), have really narrow choices as to where to work. could they go to mcdonalds or starbucks? of course they can. in a small community with a thousand people out of work because the textiles factory has been moved to china (because walmart demands a certain price), how many starbucks are there really to go around? and really, let me answer the rebuttal to that point right now of "well, they could go to another town, they could go to school, etc.", yes, they could. but you aren't in their shoes. you don't know what it's like to grow up in a small community, starting a family, being comfortable living your life the way everyone did before you only to have a company force your manufacturing job overseas and then setting up shop in your town. you didnt go to college, you've been living your life. are you going to pack up your family, move to the city, not having college under your belt and trying to start over or, will you try to get one of the 6 jobs at mcdonalds or one of the 100 open gigs at walmart? lets not make that decision of people working there an easy one because YOU arent in that situation.
and yes, you folks are right, no one is forced to buy there. but like i said when i started this post, we're conditioned to buy, bury our heads, ignore whats going on in the world. he who has the most toys wins. so, if people can save $20 a week on groceries at walmart, they now have $20 to buy something they surely don't need so they can try and fit in. i personally would rather spend that extra $20 on community owned stores. and if you want to spend that $20 at walmart, that's your right also. but lets not bury our heads to what walmart has done to american jobs. for you guys to young to remember, walmarts big slogan in the 80's was "made in america". you dont hear that anymore in their commercials.
and to the third point i started this tirade with, ""the walmart bashers want to use the government to prevent suppliers, etc. from voluntary transactions"
actually, it was walmart who has used the government, to change import laws, to allow them to import with minimal taxes. they then have forced, yes, forced, suppliers to move operations overseas for cheaper labor. yes, i am a vendor of walmart and i can unequivocally tell you that they are shady. example you want? sure. and please dont think this is an isolated instance, it isnt. what i'm about to explain accounts for around 2 - 3% of walmarts bottom line and happens daily with all venodrs. lets say i ship 30 units of whatever i sell to a walmart store, their receiving department receives the box, signs the paperwork, all is good. we invoice them for the receipt, they pay their bill, all is still good.
now imagine two YEARS later, walmart accounting comes to you about that delivery and wants you to prove that there were 30 units in that box. you can prove that they received the box but two years after the fact, how do you prove there were 30 units in that box? they say they only received one and they want a credit for 29. and guess what? they will hold payment on any open invoices you have with them, refuse payment, until you give them money back for those 29 units. what do you do? stop selling to them? sell only to small mom and pop shops who are being forced out of business because they cant keep up with walmart mandated overseas manufacturing? so to say that vendors have "voluntary" transactions with walmarts, sorry to say, is just incorrect.
and one last point, believe me, i could go on and on, that walmart supplies jobs, yup, they do. they also keep the majority of their work force (something like 80%) as part time so as not to have to offer health care. so, instead of hiring 200 employees per store as full time and provide them with health care, they hire 400 and provide none. and yes, walmart is in this for business and their bottom line. and there have been numerous studies showing that a minimal expenditure (minimal) from a company, to provide benefits, to provide a fair wage and have healthy employees only strengthens that companies work force and productivity. and since we, as a civilized country, refuse to provide basic health care for our citizens, shouldn't it fall on an employer? it certainly can not fall on the individual who makes $7 an hour at walmart, works under 24 hours a week, has to pay rent, feed and clothes their family, etc.
this is much deeper issue than "cheap groceries and clothes" and we'd all (myself included) be a lot better off educating ourselves to what the bigger picture is.
closing question for the walmart shoppers in here and who love the lower prices. look around, how many things are you surrounded by that aren't necessities? you have a dvd player? a cell phone? is saving that 20 or 50 dollars a week on groceries at walmart so you can rent movies or have a cell phone worth the cost of what walmart has done to business in this country?
