E3: The Gears of War mural, day 2

May 8th 2006 4:16PM (Joystiq)
I think all of us "confused" ones were expecting one picture to be of day one and the other to be of day two. That is all.

It looks like the same picture. He's sitting in the same place, in the same way, and looks to be touching in almost the same place.

Microsoft's Massive acquisition now official

"Advertising opens all sorts of opportunities. Joystiq would not exist if the ad-supported content model didn't exist. I hate the annoying ads on our site as much as you do, but those ads allow us to hire writers to blog about games." by VC

What does that have to do with video games? I pay for the game, I don't get it for free, but I get Joystiq for free, so I expect to see ads. Also, I subscribe to both IGN and Gamespot and they both allow subscribers to turn off most ads (mainly those annoying popups and ads between page views). I don't pay $50-$60 to see ads for any game, including sporting games. I like fake ads in games (especially game commentary). Now, instead of hearing about Spackle Butt Cream, I'll have to hear about real life products (like Coke, Cadillac, Frito-Lay, etc). I don't want to see that crap. It's all ridiculous. Real life ads in games SUCK!

Oh, and I'm sure we will start to see game patches whose sole purpose is to update the advertisers in your game. Great freaking idea! More money for them, more annoying for me!

Why HD DVD will prevail: my opinion

Apr 23rd 2006 11:14AM (Engadget HD)
First, the PS3 will give Blu-Ray a major advantage. Any comparisons to DVD/PS2 are invalid. DVD was the only format, of course it didn't kill anything; however, the PS3 will see a worldwide installed base of around 3 million units by the end of this and close to 10mil by the end of next year. There is now way that HD-DVD will have those kinds of numbers.

Early adopters to a stand alone unit don't mean jack. Ma and Pa Kettle end format wars and when they finally shell out for that big tv and they realize that the PS3 they bought their son last year is a Blu-Ray player, do you really think they are going to run out and buy an HD-DVD player for it. Not!

Lastly, to all of you that are throwing around $500-$800 PS3 prices, you must be crazy. There is NO way that the PS3 will be priced above $450 and I bet that it will most likely be between $399 and $425. You may not like Sony, but they are not stupid. Gaming is a huge, huge part of their financials and they aren't going to blow it by selling their PS3 for some astronomical, company-killing price! They don't want another Betamax, they NEED the PS3 to sell big and sell fast and they'll do what what is necessary to guarantee it!!!!

Hot deets on Burger King's Xbox 360 promo

22 million systems sold by the end of this year? Someone's been smoking the burgers instead of eating them!

Download Oblivion's horse armor, for a price

Apr 3rd 2006 7:05PM (Joystiq)
I think that this is ridiculous, especially as I've heard that the armor doesn't improve the horses armor rating, it's just horse clothing! Expect a lot more of this "horse crap" in the future! Eventually, you will see stuff like the best car for a racing game or the best armor/weapon for a RPG. It's coming and it ain't gonna be pretty!!!

"I believe I can fly!" GRAW glitch

Mar 14th 2006 9:27PM (Joystiq)
This is the main problem with XBL. Now, Microsoft can let developers get away with really, buggy (yes, I know every system has games that are buggy, but it seems worse this go round) "software" and patch it with an update through XBL. I have a feeling this is only going to get worse. Really pathetic!

I'm really looking forward to Oblivion, but I can't imagine what we'll find wrong in this game!

It's our 2nd birthday and we're giving you the presents!
