Battlefield 3's lack of DLC: DICE general manager explains

Mar 14th 2012 1:56AM (Joystiq)
@JasonA Game software makes up the MOST complex software systems in the world. You effectively have to simulate reality and produce a bug-free image every 1/30 of a second on a very large number of hardware configurations. And then for MP on top of that, you have to account for multiple internet configurations, cheating, VOIP.

It's insane. There are so many things to go wrong, and it's extremely difficult to find bugs until you release to the public, because there's just no way to predict what your environment will be like in the wild.

So are there problems? Yeah. But that's expected. As long as DICE keeps the patches coming, I'll be happy. Besides, considering that 99% of the time I have absolutely NO issues with BF3 (aside from teammates who dont PTFO), I think it's pretty damn good.

DICE's future plans go beyond the Battlefield franchise

@maveric101 ^ This. I watched a speedrun of ME and the runner took some paths that I never thought existed.

@FlashJS I agree. The campaign was short, but one of the more memorable FPS campaigns I've played in a while.

@TheDarkWayne Yeah, but FB2 was designed with the next-gen (high-end PC hardware) in mind. It'll be used on launch titles for the next gen consoles. UE3, on the other hand, is approaching the end of it's cycle, with UE4 looming on the horizon.

Anyway, Frostbite 2 looks amazing, so no complaints here =)

@iceytoa1 Wait... what? Frostbite 2 is a next gen engine. UE3 is a current gen engine.

@SpaceFox - Well, to be fair, SOTC looked pretty incredible. The animation on Trico from the earlier trailers looks pretty darn good too. But yeah, it's not about the graphics. It's about the experience, which the graphics have a part in creating.

@eat it - Also, you can make a game look amazing without jamming it full of the latest features. Just sayin.
