GDC 2011: Remedy brings Death Rally to iOS

On a side note... how about a port of Carmageddon?!

GDC 2011: Remedy brings Death Rally to iOS

Mar 8th 2011 8:15AM (TUAW.com)
You know, I'd love to see an iOS port of Max Payne for the newer gyroscope equiped iPhone/iPod Touch. Bullet-time combat would probably be a thing of beauty if the controls were tweaked enough to limit touching the screen to fire.

Double Dragon punches iOS in the gut

Mar 8th 2011 7:59AM (Joystiq)
Is it me, or does this seem like an "unofficial" version Double Dragon created by some obsessed fan of the series. I'm not saying the game itself is necessarily "bad" (or a shameless port of a third party's IP for some fast cash), but it seems to lack info... like if it was from Taito or anyone for that matter...

It is kind of interesting though, as they seem to have modernized combat a bit, as in things like weapons don't vanish if you carry them beyond a certain point, also the micro cut scenes are mildly entertaining.

That said, I'm doubtful this game will be up for more than a couple days before it gets pulled for some reason. :-/

'Super Mario' 3DS teased with tail logo

Mar 2nd 2011 1:43PM (Joystiq)
You guys remember a game called "Super Paper Mario" from the early Wii days? I'm thinking it's probably that set in the SMB3 universe, minus the paper mario stuff. Maybe add in a wider variety of powerups picked out of the last 25 years of mario games, along with a few completely new ones for the mario team to brag about. And, maybe a bit more daring on level designs, such as those seen in user-created renderings of Mario Galaxy redone as a 2D platformer.

What's in a Name: 2D Boy

Feb 4th 2011 8:17AM (Joystiq)
Not very exciting for an identity story... at least mine has a bit more history to it. "Bones" was a nickame tha was handed down to me by a past school bully as his description of my overall condition and appearance at the time. Having a condition called Marfans Syndrome, I was constantly tall, skinny and pasty looking, as well as double jointed with hyper-extended arms, legs, fingers... and a torso that required surgical correction every couple years. I'm not sure if it was necessarily my looks at the time, or the fact that I had a doctor's excuse from gym and early leave privileges for lunch and the bus that granted me such attention, but the "bones" name caught on just a couple years before I discovered the world of BBSes and the internet, so I kept the name and made it my online identity, since anyone I knew locally would immediately recognize it.

The 3D part came about around my senior year of high school when I latched onto some of the early video editing tools the school had just acquired. (An Amiga 4000 unit with video toaster package, and all 300 or so floppy disks the software was distributed on... including lightwave!) I ended up spending so much time with it, I was asked to try teaching it to the other students, because my instructors couldn't figure it out. I eventually went to college and got a degree in computer science in art, animation and multimedia... so the whole "Bones3D" identity was rather appropriate for me. The bonus... I had the name before technology like Inverse Kinematics became commonplace in 3D software, and now with technology like the Kinect now available to practically everyone, it's almost impossible for me not to be associated with it! (Good thing I've been researching 3D scanning technologies over the last couple years... though, it's weird it became so huge with the public this fast...)

iPad's App Store gets search filters

Feb 4th 2011 7:29AM (TUAW.com)
It's not very good. Either it uses a different database or it's been designed to exclusively search through a very limited selection of the total app store catalog. It could be time sensitive perhaps...like maybe it can only search from whatever apps were added to the catalog after the feature was launched.

(Actually, now that I think of it, this is not unlike how the early app store was prior to the addition of subcategories in games...)

iDOS 2: The return of the emulator

Jan 20th 2011 2:08PM (TUAW.com)
Amazing.... the software responds to bluetooth keyboard input exactly like a normal PC. Combined with one of those iPad cases that have the keyboard built in, it's just like a laptop from the 90s, but with a far better display.

Too bad you can't add a bluetooth mouse into the setup without jailbreaking though. Other than that, the thing is practically a complete old school PC.

George Hotz: I got sued for 'making Sony mad'

Jan 16th 2011 7:13PM (Joystiq)
So...

How does a minor "violate" a contract agreement, when they can't even enter into one in the first place? Oh wait... the parents are supposed to be the ones entering into the contract on the kid's behalf, right?

I wonder how many parents actually handle a game console past the point of handing the box to their kid? Most of them don't even have the technical know-how to get their VCR to stop blinking 12:00, let alone knowing anything about what an HDMI port is used for.

Besides, do these companies ever print their EULAs on the package so even the most informed of us can decide if we agree with it or not *before* dropping $300+ at our local Walmart? And how easy is it to return opened equipment to a store when it's not defective and may include software in the box that may have been copied by the end user prior to returning it?

Finally, how many parents actually differentiate a game console from any other toys their kids might have? Shouldn't it be against the law for companies like sony to sell products your kid could potentially commit a felony with (say violating the DMCA) while marketing it as a completely harmless product for families with children?

DocScanner successfully transitions from iOS to Mac app

Jan 5th 2011 7:36PM (TUAW.com)
This really make you think... Is the Mac OS on its way out, to be replaced by some version of iOS in the near future?

I have a strong feeliing that once cloud computing becomes commonplace, there will be no further need for things like the finder or even file manageement. We'll simply either download our apps from the app store to use locally, or run them from a master copy stored on a cloud server and pay a small rental fee for use with extra for better performance. The apps themselves will be responsible for their own files giving the user the option to store a file locally or on a cloud server.

Ultimately, I think Apple wants to make every piece of hardware they produce as easy to use as an iPod. By switching everything over to the iOS, they could do just that. And, by moving into cloud computing, the concept of syncing our devices becoomes seamless, as all of our devices would simply need to use the same cloud for instant access to all their content.

Mac OS 10.7 is likely going to be the middle ground for making the iOS transition happen.
