Giveaway: Two new Element carbon-fiber iPhone 4 cases

My worst iPhone impact was pretty gentle -- dropped the corner of it on hard concrete. Luckily, it survived!

Tweeting from a Newton

Jun 1st 2011 11:22AM (TUAW.com)
Compared to devices like the iPhone and the iPad, the Newton seems hopelessly outdated. The fact that the Newton can interface with the modern Internet at all, though, is a true example of how ahead-of-its-time the Newton truly was.

Wired, GQ in-app purchase subscriptions launching today

May 24th 2011 12:58PM (TUAW.com)
I agree with you in spirit -- that's my biggest gripe about the New York Times' subscription plans. I don't want to *have* to receive the paper in order to get the best price! That makes no sense!

However, I've been a Wired subscriber for years, partly because their print magazine is so gorgeous. It really is a sensuous pleasure to read the print edition; the iPad version had a high bar set for it. You might want to check out a subscription to the print + tablet edition, and then dutifully recycle the print edition when you choose to get rid of it. (It's better than having to recyce a daily newspaper.)

Six reasons iPad 2 will be a huge success for Apple

Mar 6th 2011 7:39PM (TUAW.com)
Um, I can read almost all of my favorite blogs in Safari on the iPad with no trouble. Notable exception: the absolutely broken attempt at redesigning Gawker websites. But it doesn't matter: I read almost all my blogs via RSS with Reeder, and when I want the full content "below the fold," I use the built-in Readability and Instapaper rendering support. I still maintain that the iPad is the *best* way to read any blog, and I actively choose to browse web sites on my iPad over PC web browsers.

Infinity Blade earns $1.6M in five days

I second the request for cloud-based saves! This is such a first-world problem, but I often wish that I wasn't tied to either my iPhone or my iPad when I have both versions of the game, or when the game is universal. For example, if I complete a level in Cut The Rope on my iPhone, I'd like it to be updated on my iPad, provided that I do a quick "sync". Is that too much to ask? :-)

Sorry Google Books, I'm sticking with iBooks

Dec 6th 2010 1:46PM (TUAW.com)
I buy from Amazon, and read on my Kindle 2, my iPad, and my iPhone. (Also available, of course, on both my Macs and my Windows PCs.) From my searching, they have the best selection at the best prices, and availability on the majority of my devices (read: all of them.)

I did use the iBooks app for a while, for PDF viewing, since it offered superior rendering -- it was faster and smoother than my other viewing apps on the iPad. However, GoodReader has mostly caught up, so I've gone back to using GoodReader as my primary file viewer on the iPad.

Angry Birds sequel will reveal pigs' point of view

Yeah, they should be ashamed of themselves for trying to profit from their creations.

Angry Birds sequel will reveal pigs' point of view

It always kind of bothered me how the Angry Birds seemed a lot like kamikaze pilots or suicide bombers. I mean, I sympathize with their goal, but I don't condone their methods! I wonder if that's the angle they'll be going for with the pigs' perspective.

Nah, maybe not. Not a very kid-friendly idea :-P Still, I'm excited for some Angry Birds multiplayer!

iPad app helps you understand US health care reform

Does it cancel out your phone call if I call AOL to commend Michael Grothaus for doing his job, which is to call attention to useful iPad apps?

iPad app helps you understand US health care reform

Oct 16th 2010 2:04PM (TUAW.com)
I knew as soon as I read this post that anti-reform commenters would dominate the thread.

We can argue about the consequences, intended and unintended, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of people are lying about the actual provisions of the law. There should be apps like this for all pieces of legislation. (Then maybe congressmen would know what they're voting on...)

I highly recommend VisibleVote -- a multi platform app -- that helps to make it easier to understand legislation before congress, and allows you to vote on it. It also lets you communicate with your legislators (or at least with their offices) to voice your opinion.
