I'm not a die-hard fanboy of any of the big 3 (have owned a nintendo, sega, and sony console threw the years) so I can say with an unbiased opinion that Microsoft failed with the launch of the 360. MS rushed the 360 out before they had enough supply to meet the obvious expected demand and before the 360 was fully ready. When you release a console just to be the first one on the market you're going to most likely fail at the start because you're launching to beat someone out to the market, not when you're ready.
The whole reason to get your console on the market first is so you can get a large user base built up. For some reason Microsoft didn't realize that in order to do so you need to make the console avaliable for purchase. The initial 360 IT factor is over and still not many people have it. Once the new systems come out the 360 will be behind when it comes to being the most powerful (PS3 will be) or most innovative (Revolution will be). If the PS3 and 360 pricing is close to the same then most people will purchase either the PS3 because it'll be the most powerful and have brand recognition or the Revolution because of it's individuality.
I think Microsoft could have had a succesful launch if they had just started with the US and then launched globaly later. At least then they could have sold a lot more in the US which is their main market. They should have worried about Japan later since the Japanese style games won't even be ready for months.
As a PS2 owner there are still a lot of upcoming games that I'm looking forward to like:
BLACK
24: The Game (hopefully it looks better then the current imageS)
MGS3S
Kingdom Hearts II
Bully
Odama
GTA: LCS (don't have a PSP so I'll get it for the PS2. Should have online play)
And that doesn't even include games that will be out on both next-gen and current systems like The Godfather
Sony knows the PS3 can't be priced over $500 or else only the most hardcore gamers will purchase it. As has been stated, Sony needs the PS3 to do well or else they're in trouble. There's no way they'd price the PS3 out of the main stream gamers price.
Also, as has been stated in comments above, the PSP price speculation was that at best it would be $300 but probably more. Instead it ended up being $185 in Japan and $250 for the Value Crap package in the US.
If the PS3 is in fact $500 it will still sell but will give M$ a big advantage. Maybe Sony will be nice enough to offer a Spider-Man 2 Blu-ray copy to the first million sold. That'll do it.
So if joystiq's assumption is correct and 2-3 years down the line the 360 has a blu-ray drive able to play games the Xbox customer base will then be seperated by those with the Core model, those with a HDD, and those with a blu-ray drive. Does that sound crazy to anyone else?
If it takes 2-3 years for a next-gen drive to come out that plays games there will already be thousands of 360 owners. Only a fraction of the most hardcore owners would actually spend the money to buy the drive. Why on earth would developers make games that would only work with a new drive and limit themselves to such a small player base.
To me this just sounds like a way false way for Microsoft to look like it is equal to the PS3. This is yet another reason while I'll hold off buying a next-gen system until all 3 are out on the market.
I haven't used a chair to play console games since my NES days when the system was down in the basement. Since then my genisis, PS1, and PS2 have all been connected to the main TV with a new couch to sit on.

You know what this means right? Yet another power supply to hide. Who the hell would want to have an external drive lying around? This failed with the Sega CD and TurboGrafx CD and will fail here. Why would you spend more money to buy an Xbox 360 + External HD-DVD drive when you can get a built in Blu-ray drive and PS3 for cheaper?

Blu-Ray and Xbox 360? It's possible, says Moore
