Shadowrun: Dean Takahashi is unimpressed

Jan 30th 2007 3:35PM (Joystiq Xbox)
"I'm not surprised that some newspaper article is way off base with their judgement of this game."

-and

"Never trust the mainstream press about purchase"

You do realize that this is article is from Dean Takahashi, writer of two in-depth books completely dedicated to the history of the development of both XBox consoles? He may have an opinion that you disagree with, but don't misrepresnt him as some clueless outsider.

SimCity DS screens for Japan, no stateside announcement

"Confrontational post contradicting original post with personal opinion! Lack of explanatory followup."

Followed by ad hominem attack.

Excellent job, David004!

Halo Trilogy theme on XBLM

Oct 30th 2006 11:27AM (Joystiq Xbox)
I always go back to the Penny Arcade theme, being that it's one of the few I've paid for and they actually seem to understand what makes a good theme: A clear picture with not a lot of detail and a different color scheme for each blade. About half the Tomb Raider themes also follow this idea. Too many themes are overly complicated pieces of concept art that only serve to obscure the text.

Oddly enough the water effects, when enabled by the Vision Camera, don't seem to be as distracting (though the camera's other effects are pretty bad).

Rutger Hauer Documentary Premieres at Dutch Film Festival

Oct 13th 2006 4:36PM (Cinematical)
"(his career, now, that's open for discussion ... but I digress)"

C'mon, the guy has progressed from headlining some cheesy, yet entertaining straight to video flicks in the mid 90s to being a solid character actor in some of the biggest releases of the last couple years. One does not appear in both Sin City and Batman Begins in the same year and not own a yacht.

Jess: I kid because I love, Hauer is the perfect example of a good actor who just didn't fit the Hollywood mold and got relegated to the video bin as a result. Plus I would never think badly of the man who mouthed those eternal words "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe"

*ahem*

Actually, Nova would be my favorite Herald of Galactus.

Review: This Film is Not Yet Rated

Aug 31st 2006 2:44PM (Cinematical)
As much as I dislike the MPAA, it is mostly for their strongarm tactics in dealing with intellectual property rights. I don't really care about their actions as a ratings board because it really doesn't affect me as a consumer. This is even moreso as lack of ratings on movies on DVD is no longer a negative mark and is a selling point in most cases. Most independent filmakers nowdays would probably do best if they cut their potentialy NC-17 movies down to an R for theaters and then release an unrated DVD considering that even Wal-mart carries unrated DVDs now.

All ratings boards will be subjective and consider similar items with similar properties in different ways. Does the movie address where the movie industry may be without a ratings board? Every other media like TV, music, comics and video games seem to have developed a ratings system only after they became a target of government attacks.

Cinematical Seven: Best Comedy Troupes

Aug 25th 2006 5:26PM (Cinematical)
"What movies were made by the SCTV crew?"

I would put those SCTV alumni (Ramis, Candy, perhaps Short and Moranis) that joined up with the early SNL Alumni (Murray, Ackroyd, Chase, Belushi, as well as Steve Martin) that created all those great comedies of the early-to-mid 80s.

Indy 4 Update: They're Doing The Phantom Menace?

My guess: Hitler's Brain.

Peter Jackson: Martial Arts Master?

Aug 14th 2006 2:35PM (Cinematical)
As much as Jackson is a competant director, I'd he seems a bit too reliant on CGI effects to be a decent martial arts director. Gimme Yuen Wo-ping or Sammo Hung for a project like this.
