Fuji Heavy unveils third-generation Subaru Boxer engine; claims 10% boost in efficiency

Sep 29th 2010 9:53PM (Autoblog Green)
10% every 1-4 years? where the hell did you get that idea?

a 10% efficiency increase in 2 decades... is actually par for the course. even with all the latest technologies, like direct injection, variable valve timing, etc. gas engines have been hitting their limits. you won't be seeing efficiency increases without sacrificing something else, like maximum power, torque, engine weight or size in gasoline engines much longer.

Ballard will make "clean power" hydrogen from bleach by-product

Aug 8th 2010 5:04PM (Autoblog Green)
ballard is one of the leading fuel cell research and development companies in the world, having been one of the first to team up with automakers and made prototype hydrogen fuel cell buses over a decade ago (i remember riding my bike by their building as a kid, and checking out the buses).

they have since scaled down their automotive research because they don't believe it'll work on a large scale. they're concentrating on buildings and stuff, like in this situation, for extra electricity or emergency power generation.

Do electric and hybrid vehicles really need to make sounds? [w/video]

Jul 25th 2010 3:32PM (Autoblog Green)
no. cars aren't completely silent, after all- the tires and motors and everything still make a sound, just not as loud. we don't need more noise pollution.

it's like saying "oh my god, a guy is riding a harley with straight pipes- should the solution be
1. crank up your stereo ridiculously loud just in case a pedestrian didn't hear your car over his
or
2. get the guy on the harley to install a damn muffler on his bike.

that's why they're delaying the FT86 (or FR86 or whatever they're calling it now).

it doesn't look boring enough.

Ford, Roush and Shelby team up for one-off charity Mustang inspired by the SR-71 Blackbird

seriously. they should have drilled holes in the fuselage and made sure it would leak gas all over the place until it heated up and got up to cruising speed.

DDWFTTW = a wind car that can go faster than the wind (also = internet fights)

Jul 16th 2010 6:43PM (Autoblog Green)
there is no violation of physics. if the air is moving, you can extract kinetic energy out of it to power your car. how you do it is up to the engineers.

it's possible to move downwind faster than the wind. all you need to do is extract the kinetic energy out of it- therefore, the wind behind the car should be moving slower, the car moves forward. conservation of energy and momentum is applied just fine.

next you're going to tell me it's impossible to sail upwind.

Apple: iPhone 4 drops 'less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS'

Jul 16th 2010 4:02PM (Engadget)
@enantiomer2000
funny how they phrased it, too. what is the dropped call rate for the 3GS? 1%, maybe? i'm just guessing. but bear with me.

so "iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS." let's just round it to 1... so the iphone 4 drops 2% of all calls.

in other words, twice as many.

now, the actual number could be totally different. if the 3GS only drops 0.1% of calls... that's a 10x increase. or if it dropped 10% of all calls, it's a 10% increase.

good old marketing playing with numbers.

Hyundai releases Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec for 2011

Jul 15th 2010 7:43PM (Autoblog)
