Netflix CEO wants streaming service on all consoles

Sep 24th 2009 9:41AM (Joystiq)
I tested the waters when it was around $30.00 and wish I would've bought more at that price.

Namco Bandai planning on more XBLA remakes of arcade classics

The further you get into Championship Mode (5 minutes), the more dots they put on the stage. This arrangement does eventually appear if you clear enough sets of dots.

NJ may be the most stressed state

Sep 9th 2008 8:40AM (WalletPop)
Every state or region has a stereotype attached to it. Unless you've ever been there it's hard to see past the stereotypes, though my wife works in a call center and she's said that the rudest people are usually from New Jersey.

Same here. Digitally distributed media reduces the rights that we have to our movies, music and games. It allows the studios to dictate how and where we can use the media we buy. I'll always choose a physical disc over a download as long as discs are available.

Physical media gives us far more flexibility than you get with a download. With a disc, I can sell it if I choose to, give it as a gift, lend it out, rip it to a non-DRM digital format, view it in any compatible player I want and more. Digital is convenient for a rental mindset, but I doubt any kids are going to be excited to get a birthday present that consists of a card that lets them download the latest Pixar movie to their set-top box at home. It's just not the same as getting a disc they can start watching immediately.

Not to mention that for large collections, you will need massive storage to keep all of that HD content. For those of us who have large collections in the hundreds or even thousands of discs, you would need an insanely huge hard drive to store all of that content. And good luck when the HD fails.

Top 5: Nintendo's Biggest "Mehs"

Jul 24th 2008 10:53AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
The only reason ROB existed was to help get the NES into stores. Following the game crash of 1983, retailers were reluctant to carry any more video game consoles. Nintendo packed ROB in with the NES and marketed it as a toy, rather than a game console, to get it into stores.

ROB may have been a big 'meh,' but the NES may have never caught on without it.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop coming to Wii this winter

Jul 22nd 2008 10:32AM (Joystiq)
There might not be a lot of zombies on screen, but if you notice, Frank is at level 1. When you first enter the mall, there are only a handful of zombies to deal with. It's not until you get further into the game that the huge seas of zombie appear.

We all know that it's going to be a downgrade from the 360 version because the Wii can't handle it, but give it a chance to prove itself before you write it off.

Video of how Netflix works on Xbox 360

Jul 22nd 2008 10:21AM (Joystiq)
I swear, some people are impossible to please and just want to complain. To me, this was the biggest announcement made at E3. It's the first major implementation of a subscription model VOD service (the Roku box was first, but there are millions of 360s out there right now).

Yeah, it's not HD (yet). Yes, most new movies aren't released on it. That's not the fault of Netflix. The studios have complicated contracts that dictate which movies can be included in the Watch Now library. They're adding everything they can and the collection will continue to grow. There will be hundreds of new movies by the time the 360 connectivity goes live. But there is currently lots of great content you can get right now. Asian horror, documentaries, anime, classics, independent film, TV shows, etc.

So what if you can't watch popular Hollywood garbage on demand right now? You can still get the movies you want that aren't available on demand on DVD/Blu Ray via mail. This is a first step towards a much greater and more robust service.

Top 25 things vanishing from America: #1 -- The family farm

Jul 15th 2008 8:32AM (WalletPop)
I grew up on a small family farm and it was heartbreaking to hear my dad point to all of the places that used to have farms. Every quarter of land had a house on it, now those houses are gone or completely falling apart.

$250,000 sounds like a lot, but in the scheme of things it's really not that much to even a moderate family farm. It's a lot of money coming in, but farming has a very high overhead with land payments/rent, machinery, fuel, fertilizer, insurance, seed, repairs, etc. A brand new combine will cost you about $250,000 alone.

Ugh -- that's offensive to me both as a Nebraskan and a graphic designer.
