Quicksilver appears to be coming back from the dead

Apr 18th 2011 9:59PM (TUAW.com)
I moved on to Launchbar. I like a lot of what Alfred has, but without proper Finder and Contact lookup actions, it's still Launchbar by a mile.

That said, I'll likely check out QS if this renewal holds up for a while. Congrats to the people behind that work; resurrection is a b.

Apple employees appear in 'It Gets Better' video

Having a qualifier of " if indeed this wasn't a mistake from too many troll flags" is pissy? Hm well different measures I guess.

Of course, that doesn't stop one from being pissy about other people being pissy, does it.

Apple employees appear in 'It Gets Better' video

A good point but it doesn't hold up to history. If Apple were worried about its reputation amongst homophobes, it wouldn't do stuff like donate 100k to oppose prop 8 (banning gay marriage) http://gizmodo.com/#!5068441/apple-giving-100000-to-oppose-anti+gay-marriage-proposition-in-ca

They have a good history of official support; leaving the brand out of here was about not turning it into a marketing opportunity, and keeping the focus on the PSA nature of the Trevor Project.

Apple employees appear in 'It Gets Better' video

It's totally disgusting that YouTube pulled the video, if indeed this wasn't a mistake from too many troll flags.

What really gets me is how many other tech companies have done their own videos, and how well done those videos are. What I also noticed was that Apple's video, like some others, have ZERO trace of their brand. They don't mention, suggest or show it.

Google on the other hand starts with a search box where 'it gets better' is searched for, you know just to remind you who they are. Adobe has a fake software menu, you know just to remind you it's them. When companies can't do something without slathering their brand over it you see their inherent weakness, that they can't do anything without it being all about them.

Zen Viewer, great-looking document management for iPad

Mar 14th 2011 8:05PM (TUAW.com)
I managed to grab this during the sale when it was .99. I like it. The functionality isn't really that new - basically a re-make of the incredible GoodReader, but with a much higher bar for sensible organization in the UI and aesthetics. If you don't use GoodReader I'd suggest Zen Reader, I'll likely switch to it for now based on feature parity, looks and ease of use.

TUAW's Daily App: Today I Die Again

Jan 21st 2011 12:11PM (TUAW.com)
JD I think your heart is in the right place but you're over simplifying things. A game title alone will not be enough to push someone into suicide. Being bullied and taunted will, as you alluded to the boy in NY who did so. But they're very different things.

Look at the game, try it out. You'll find it's quite the opposite of what you think it is; if anything it seemed to be a set of metaphors related to depression and mechanisms for overcoming them. It's free, so the only thing you have to lose is the position that this is somehow socially irresponsible. It's exactly the opposite.

Twitter for Mac update removes hidden features

Twitter is handling this so sloppily.

Stolen Mac tracking app Hidden was free until January (Update: all done!)

It's not email harvesting, I got a copy of the software, installed and hooked up my account without any problems. Just because you get an error message doesn't make it fair play to accuse them of email harvesting through some elaborate conspiracy. Grow up.

Find my iPhone to be free in iOS 4.2 for current-gen devices

Nov 22nd 2010 10:24AM (TUAW.com)
@Pete it's true that Apple didn't invent device tracking. I can't put my finger on where they claim to have, so if you find that maybe give a pointer.

But the real point isn't what Apple invents as much as what technological benefits does it a) realize people want and b) design in such a way that people understand what it does and can use it easily.

Case in point, Time Machine. Windows had a backup function buried in it for years catchily called Volume Shadow Copy. Few users know about it, fewer use it. Compare that with TM which just needs an external drive plugged in and a click to confirm to set up. That's the difference, though there's not much room to be cynical about it.

Oh and they made Find My iPhone free. They didn't invent free either! Grrrr! Jobs!!!

BlackBerry PlayBook vs. iPad: The challenger looks fast so far

Nov 17th 2010 9:57PM (TUAW.com)
Opera's method of serving web pages does work differently from others, not so much in caching I believe but in compression. It's possible the Playbook is using a similar idea.
