I love the variety of weapons in most action games, but there's always something so viscerally pleasing about beating the juice out of enemies with your fists.

How is it not useful? It's basically replacing all of the possible inputs from an analog stick (theoretically infinite?) with only those that you need, at the same time giving you more fingers to use for that purpose, in a more comfortable hand position.

Regardless of how uninteresting you might think it is, you can't deny its usefulness.
